My main job is not to organise events, but somehow at RSGI, our content and networks have put us in this role. I think of panels as performance art, you have a story to tell, and your speakers tell it in their own words, guided by the moderator (aka the director). This year, I wanted to make a call to arms to the profession that as a sector we can together help the world solve some of the intractable problems it faces. That lawyers' unique role and skillset are needed more than ever. As they stepped up in the financial crisis of 2008, so they need to do so now. I think - with the help of an amazing case - we succeeded in doing that on Wednesday. The film below gives you a taster. Now NEXT YEAR, 2025, marks the 20th anniversary of the #ftinnovativelawyers programme. We are going to do something entirely different on the 25 June 2025, in the Peninsula Hotel in London. Hold the date, make space, and be prepared to celebrate! We will celebrate the top twenties.....innovators from the past to help us inspire the innovators of the future. https://lnkd.in/g8Z7F3G3

Big Law: Influencers or Spectators? I am feeling inspired by the final prep call for this year's Summit on how in-house legal teams and law firms can work together to punch above its weight, to enable the legal sector to answer some of the big world problems facing us. Two amazing discussion leads, Duncan Weston, PhD and Scott G Dresser, with lived experience in Russia and globally, and Suzi Ring at the FT moderating. I think, with the help of the legal leaders in the room, we will get to a template on how legal leaders can strategise and speak out around thorny, conflicting issues. The Summit is on Wednesday 11th September at the Biltmore Hotel, Mayfair. If you want to attend, privately DM me or Mina Jenkins at RSGI and we can see what we can do. Full agenda can be seen here: https://lnkd.in/gNwUTX7

If not now, when? This was the title of a Primo Levi novel I read when I was a student and which had a big impact on me. I borrowed it to name this year’s FT/RSGI summit, as I do think we are at an inflection point for the profession where Big Law has to be more active on critical issues: from the justice gap to misinformation to polarisation. Our array of speakers and moderators are some of the best thinkers on our agenda topics. Having just finished most of the prep calls this week, I can see these sessions will also have impact. If you want to be reinspired and renewed as a leader, join us at the Biltmore Hotel next Wednesday. We will also be revealing the 15 chief legal officers who made this year’s FT Business Legal Leaders list. Some snippets from the agenda include: Tom Kilroy, ex GC and now CEO at Keyloop, with his take on AI and why the profession is thinking about it all wrong; Michele DeStefano who will compere the Reimagining Legal sessions and who will get the delegates to stand up with their ideas, helped by some creative presentations from the likes of David Wang, Christina Demetriades. Jon Chan, Gabriel Buigas, Alex Smith, and Marion Palmer. And other people I am looking forward to are Rick Sharma, Thom Wetzer, Clare Francis, and Maaike de Bie talking about what it means to be a good corporate citizen as a legal organisation and Big Law's role in ethical business, moderated by the FT's management editor, herself experienced in these issues through her coverage of the energy industry, Anjili Raval. Have you ever been tempted to make the move to a start-up? As part of the FT Business Legal Leaders series, we talked to individuals who have done just that. Take Sean Martin and Paul Swegle, who have found rewarding careers after leaving behind the security of a big company to help guide new ventures in the life sciences sector. Read Jane Croft's story here: https://lnkd.in/eWuqU_MT This year's Business Legal Leaders list will be published on September 11 in tandem with the FT Innovative Lawyers Global Summit. May Day, so many changes happening today. It feels like lots of trends and ideas are coming to fruition. My favourite was looking at A&O Shearman's new website. Out of the 6 practice areas they list, one of them is Legal Innovation, alongside finance, corporate, disputes etc. Twenty years ago I remember sitting across the table with 11 people from A&O when I was pitching them my idea to rank lawyers on innovation. They were keen and could see the value of having an innovative mindset for a lawyer. Not many law firms or others at that time could see that same value, and I spent a lot of time pitching the idea to people. That was 2005. We launched the first FT Innovative Lawyers report in 2006. Since then, A&O has remained committed to thinking differently. But to see that innovation is listed as a core area of work alongside a legal practice area in the new combined firm is .....what's the word? Heartening? A coming of age for legal innovation? #ftinnovativelawyers With thanks to all the early (and new) believers at A&O and in the industry, and at the FT. There are lots more people to name but this is a quick post to mark a moment!
