Jane Barrett, Head of Reuters AI Strategy, shares key takeaways from an essential panel held at the Thomson Reuters Foundation Trust Conference yesterday, where important questions were asked about the use of AI in news production and distribution.
It was a privilege to speak at the Thomson Reuters Foundation Trust Conference about #AI and #news with a really excellent panel hosted by Vivian Schiller. I always learn so much from colleagues from around the world. A few highlights: 1) Glenda Gloria shared how Rappler is using AI to engage audiences with their news via their RAI bot - and also working with local authorities to plug in other civic information that people should be able to query and learn about. A great example of how we can work across industries for the good of society using AI. 2) Roman Anin from IStories Media shared how a small newsroom, working in exile, can use AI to collect sources and information and classify them as well as translate journalism to reach wider audiences. Proof that AI can empower small news organisations to do big work. 3) Richard Gingras from Google made an impassioned plea for how we might use AI to help bring people together and dial down the divisiveness in society. We hear about models being trained on biased data but what if we could use them to unbias some conversations? 4) After a few panels which worried about the potential negative effects of AI on journalism and society, it was great to discuss the more positive side - how we are using these tools to solve our editorial problems and meet new needs, all under our journalistic standards and ethics. The technology is here - use it and learn how it can be helpful both for us and our audiences (current and future). 5) Human in the loop #HITL is not optional. We have a lot of skills, expertise and standards we can use to make sure AI is used for good and not ill. #TC2024
