About us
The Railways Pension Scheme is one of the UK’s largest and longest established pension funds. Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion on behalf of the scheme’s 350,000 members who are connected to the railway industry. Railpen's purpose is to secure our members' future. To achieve this we invest the scheme’s assets to generate strong returns over the long term. Our members and their employers trust us with this very significant responsibility. We are proud of this responsibility, take it very seriously, and are committed to, and passionate about, improving their future lives. Generating the required returns is challenging. To be successful we must constantly strive to be considered a world-class asset owner by our stakeholders, with a proven track record of adding value for our members. This means we have to have excellent people, doing exemplary work, in every part of our business. We use the size of our assets to invest wisely and influentially. Our convictions and a clear set of investment beliefs guide us through complex and changing markets. We’re not afraid to think innovatively or act boldly in the best interests of the members we are proud to serve.

This month marks 30 years of the Railways Pension Scheme – one of the largest and longest-established schemes in the UK. The RPS was formed in 1994 following the privatisation of the railways. Today, it supports 350,000 members across over 100 Sections. Overall responsibility for the Scheme sits with the Trustee which delegate the safekeeping and investment of the £34bn assets to Railpen. Railpen is proud to support the Trustee to deliver on its mission to pay pensions securely, affordably and sustainably, which we do through our own purpose of securing our members’ future. Looking back over the last three decades, we see the impact the RPS has had on the lives of members. Andrew Turnball, an active member in his early 20s (and new to rail) has explained how fortunate he feels to have such a good pension scheme available to him, while retired member, Phil Williams, said: “The RPS is an excellent pension scheme and there are very few in the country that can match it”. John Chilman, Railpen CEO for the last six years (having joined the Trustee Board in 2007), reflects on the RPS’ rich heritage and the strong funding position it’s in today: “The success of UK rail is reflected in the fact that we have more active members now than when the industry was privatised in 1994. During that time we’ve seen RPS Sections increase to over 100 and Railpen build its support to the Trustee to address Scheme-specific and increasingly diverse funding and investment requirements. “Railpen’s decision in 2013 to bring our investment management capability in house has amplified our ability to adapt flexibly to enhance funding levels when new opportunities arise. This in particular has played its part in achieving the excellent funding positions we see today across the RPS Sections.” Looking forward, John adds: “I am stepping down as Chief Executive next week. Andy Bord will lead Railpen, and support the Scheme, in the next chapter of its history”. You can read more about the RPS, including a timeline and hear from more members, on the Scheme website at https://ow.ly/vyzR50TAtbJ You can also follow the scheme on X at @RPSPensions #RailwaysPensionScheme #UKRailways

The International Corporate Governance Network Global Stewardship Disclosure Awards recognise investors whose public disclosures provide genuine insight into their stewardship policies, how the policies have been implemented, and their commitment to transparency and reporting to provide a model that other investors might follow. Railpen is honoured to have been named winner of this prestigious award (asset owner <£60bn). We’re proud of our Stewardship Report which the Trustee and Railpen publish annually to reflect our commitment to high investment standards for UK savers and pensioners in alignment with the 2020 UK Stewardship Code. It explains the importance of ESG issues, our influence on companies and the impact of our actions. Caroline Escott, Senior Investment Manager, comments: "Stewardship is all about discharging our duty of care to beneficiaries – what we've done, why, and the difference it’s made. Our stewardship reporting is a vital transparency mechanism to stakeholders on progress and lessons learned. We put a lot of effort into these disclosures and, naturally, we're delighted this has been recognised by the ICGN panel. Railpen’s Senior Investment Analyst, Sophie Harris, collected the award on Railpen’s behalf. She said: "We're absolutely thrilled to have picked up the ICGN Global Stewardship Disclosure Award. Our reporting is a product of hard work across many Railpen teams and the award is testament to the benefits of true collaboration. Special thanks to colleagues in Design and Communications who help us shape our stewardship story and get our messages across."
