🧯What makes a successful fire evacuation drill? 🧯 Large numbers of people can be hard to manage in an evacuation drill. Many businesses rarely practice drills because they’re seen as difficult. To help you practice more efficiently, use the four main elements to a successful fire evacuation drill: plan, inform, coordinate and confirm. 1) Plan Break down your plan into steps, using your fire risk assessment as a guide. Create a zone map of the premises and assign each fire marshal a zone to clear. Consider the complexity of escape routes. Appoint a Fire Coordinator to liaise between marshals, occupants, facilities staff and the Fire & Rescue Service. 2) Inform Coordinators, marshals, and facilities staff should understand how the premises’ alarm system works, their role in evacuating occupants, and the responsibility of fire prevention. Occupants should have awareness of the evacuation plan and have it freely and easily available. Use communal areas like canteens and staff rooms to display the plan. Agree any Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) with staff who cannot respond to the fire alarm. Make sure marshals know the details, any of them may have to step in. 3) Coordinate The drill itself should take no longer than 2-3 minutes, depending on the size of the premises. Two-way radios are an easy way to communicate and confirm which areas are clear, or which call point has activated. Don’t rely on fire registers – they can’t guarantee the building is fully evacuated. The most reliable method is for marshals to clear their zones, and report back to the coordinator. 4) Confirm Chances are, your drill won’t go exactly to plan first time. The point is to practice. Schedule in regular drills until everyone recognises the alarm, and responds to it every time. After all, it’s only three minutes out of everyone’s day, once or twice a year. If you can perfect your evacuation drill, you are empowering your staff to save lives.
