Taking sustainable, innovative medical device design further - Pd-m and Cardiac-Tech Ltd collaboration. A recent project between Pd-m and Cardiac-Tech Ltd exemplifies our motto "We take you further" in action. Here's how we approached enhancing temporary pacemaker technology: - Evaluated transition from single-use to multiple-use cables. - Assessed strategies to reduce product environmental impact. - Maintained focus on clinical requirements and patient care. - Leveraged our healthcare professionals' network for practical insights. This collaboration showcases how innovation in Health-Tech can address both clinical needs and environmental concerns. It's a prime example of sustainable healthcare in action! Sustainable product design can reduce emissions and boost profits At Pd-m, we're highly focused on helping manufacturers tackle the design challenge head-on. We specialise in sustainable innovation that not only reduces emissions but also increases margins. According to a 2022 report by McKinsey & Company, companies that prioritize sustainability in their product design see an average of 20% increase in revenue growth compared to their peers. This demonstrates that sustainable design isn't just good for the planet – it's good for business too. Interested in learning more? We promote and support early careers in design and the creative industry! This week we’ve had the pleasure hosting Aran on a Product Design work placement at Pd-m. Aran is studying A-levels in Design Technology, Maths, Physics and Further Maths and wanted to get experience in the design profession. During his work experience Aran got first hand experience of the design process by shadowing the team on their individual projects. He also experimented with CAD and our 3D printers, producing his own design and prototype of an innovative mobile phone holder. Here’s an overview of Aran’s experience at Pd-m. Pd-m: Why did you want to do a work placement in design? Aran: I really enjoyed doing GCSE Design Technology and chose to continue it for A-level. As it is one of the areas that I am considering taking to higher education and beyond, I was interested in what it would look like in a commercial setting. Pd-m: How was your time at Pd-m and did it meet your expectations? Aran: I really enjoyed my time at Pd-m as it was my first time ever working in a professional environment. I got to experience what a Product Designer is involved with during a typical working day. On top of this I went through a very condensed process of designing a product on CAD and then utilising 3D printers to produce the model. My overall experience was beyond my expectations and has given me a much greater understanding of the job of a product designer and of working life in general. Pd-m: What are your short and long term aspirations? Aran: After school, I am considering either going to university to study general or mechanical engineering, or doing a degree apprenticeship at an engineering or design firm with a view to working in a professional design or engineering role. I hope in the future to run my own business. The team at Pd-m wish Aran well in his future education and career! #workplacement #design #STEM #career #productdesign #designtechnology #innovation Tri Pramoj Design Council Cat Drew Dr Robert Phillips Lauren Moriarty Dr David Swann

Beyond the Medals: Paris 2024 Did you know this year's Olympics stood for sustainability as much as sportsmanship? Here are 5 sustainable practices that set these Games apart: - Eiffel Tower Medals: Athletes' medals contained 18 grams of iron from the iconic landmark, promoting circular economy. - Recycled Furniture: The Olympic Village featured coffee tables made from old badminton shuttlecocks and chairs from recycled bottle caps. - Renewable Energy: 95% of venues were pre-existing and powered by renewable energy. - Smart Aquatics Center: Concave rooftop reduced heating needs by 30%. Pools heated using waste heat from a nearby data centre. Roof solar panels provided 20% of electricity needs - Eco-Friendly Seating: Grandstand seats were made locally from 30 tons of recycled plastic waste. Bonus: Athletes slept on beds made of recyclable cardboard! These creative ideas from Paris 2024 really got us thinking at Pd-m. How can we bring some of this Olympic-level sustainability into our own lives? We’d love to hear what you think! #Paris2024 #SustainableInnovation #circularity #sustainability #olympics #netzero Design Council
