Prevalence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) Estimates of the prevalence of ADHD vary across populations. A recently published paper (Popit et al. 2024) reviews the different methodologies used to determine the prevalence and concludes that the type of study significantly affects the prevalence of ADHD. The authors argue that It is necessary to standardise diagnostic procedures to monitor rates of ADHD efficiently and that this is important in order to allow policy makers to plan effectively.  The authors ‘propose that the current estimate of the prevalence of ADHD should be based on the average of all study types.’ Popit S, Serod K, Locatelli I, Stuhec M. After a very successful workshop on #Dyspraxia last week, we are now looking forward to a further thought-provoking workshop on Thursday 28th November.  "See Me As One: Holistic approach to supporting neurodivergent students" will be presented online by two experienced practitioners.  The workshop will explore how we link theory in our practice as SpLD Tutors to provide a holistic approach to flexibly meet student’s needs. This training is open to PASSHE members only so if it is of interest, why not consider joining PASSHE to take advantage of insightful and competitively priced accredited CPD and training opportunities.

Disabled and disappointed The 2024 National Student survey results show that disabled students, particularly students with mental health issues, tend to be less satisfied with nearly every aspect of their university experience than their peers. This includes (for providers in England) reporting feeling less comfortable with sharing their ideas and opinions. This is, of course, only a partial picture as students are included in multiple groups in the data analysis so an intersectional analysis is difficult. However, given that disabled students make up approximately 18% of the home student population it is concerning and suggests that disabled student interventions are not providing equity. https://lnkd.in/ggsEmnN2

Paris Hilton sees her ADHD as her superpower - Is the superpower narrative helpful? Paris Hilton’s latest album includes a song entitled ADHD with the following lyrics: Now look at me, I’m the best I can be I was so down, thought I’d never be free My superpower was right inside, see? It was ADHD. She has said that she wants to break down the stigma surrounding ADHD and help people, especially girls and women embrace their unique strengths. However, not everyone sees referring to ADHD as a superpower as helpful. Journalists in both the Independent and Cosmopolitan question whether references to ADHD as a superpower may do as much harm as good. The superpower narrative implies that neurodivergent individuals possess exceptional talents and abilities, and of course some may. However, this framing may create unrealistic expectations. Not every neurodivergent individual does have exceptional abilities.
