“Being open about mistakes doesn’t come naturally to a lot of people. In many areas of life, we’re encouraged to always present the best version of ourselves. And demonstrating fallibility at work can be particularly tough. In the PDS Digital Transformation directorate, we’ve been intentional about creating a ‘psychologically safe’ environment, or a healthy mistakes culture. This week is #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek so it’s a good time to reflect on this. People should feel happy, safe and able to be themselves at work, and a healthy mistakes culture is a big part of this. It also has many organisational benefits. Teams that feel happy, safe and valued are more likely to collaborate well, learn and apply new skills, and take the kind of educated risks that help an organisation transform and grow. For me, as a leader, role-modelling fallibility is a starting point – being open about my own mistakes, saying “we’re all human, and so am I”. We’ve backed this up with practices that allow the team to explore and discuss their own experiences. One of our values at PDS is curiosity so we apply this to our mistakes. It’s not that we celebrate mistakes, but we do approach them with a growth mindset. We learn from them. We also take inspiration from ‘failing fast’ culture – spotting mistakes early can allow us to fix issues quickly, saving time and money in the long-term. As we’ve been more and more intentional about our approach to this, the team health score, which we measure monthly, has consistently improved.” 📈 😊 Libby Kurien, PDS’s Director of Digital Transformation blogs about her team's experience of creating a healthy mistakes culture, promoting a growth mindset, and improving the health of the team. Parliament’s transparency registers are an important way of making information about Members and Lords’ interests accessible to the public. As part of Parliament’s digital transformation journey, we brought together a multi-disciplinary team to improve these registers. We were honoured to host Anderson Quigley’s Women in Tech event at Parliament on Wednesday. It was incredible to have so many inspiring, insightful and ambitious (as we discussed, that’s a good thing!) women in one room. We heard about their journeys into tech, the challenges, and the power of ‘soft’ skills. A huge thank you to the amazing panel, the engaged audience, which included many male allies, and to Grace Tattersall - CIO/CTO Recruitment/Women in Tech and Daniel Cook for making it happen!
Thank you to everyone who attended our third Women in Tech event yesterday, held at the House of Commons and hosted by AQ Partner Grace Tattersall and Daniel Cook from Parliamentary Digital Service. Our incredible panel, chaired by Femi Otitoju from EW Group, featured Elizabeth Akorita, Emma Price, Nikola Spicer, Emma Canny, Libby Kurien and Heather Pike. They discussed topics such as why team health and well-being are essential to delivering digital transformation, the impact of female leadership qualities during digital transformation and how to deliver technology and digital transformation as a “non-techie”.
