PAPYRUS is the leading UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

About us

PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. Suicide is the biggest killer of people aged 35 and under in the UK. We believe that suicide is preventable. PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress. We believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide. Our suicide prevention helpline, HOPELINE247 is staffed by trained suicide prevention advisers, who work with young people – and anybody concerned for a young person – to help keep them safe from suicide. HOPELINE247 is a free and confidential call, text and email service, which is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year (weekends and bank holidays included). We deliver our suicide prevention education and training packages to thousands of people each year, to create suicide-safer communities across the UK. PAPYRUS envisions a society which speaks openly about suicide and has the resources to help young people who have suicidal thoughts. No young person should have to suffer alone with thoughts or feelings of hopelessness, and nobody should have to go through the heartbreak of losing a young person to suicide. Everyone can play a role in preventing young suicide.

  • If you’re experiencing thoughts of suicide (or are concerned for a young person who might be) and need support, but are worried about confidentiality, we’d like to reassure you that we’re always here to provide personal, confidential support – and that we’d only intervene in the event of immediate risk to yourself or somebody else, or if there was a safeguarding issue. You can find more information about our confidentiality and emergency intervention process in the graphics below. If you have any questions about our HOPELINE247 service, please visit our FAQs: https://lnkd.in/etRhrPDT Our Advisers are here to support you every single day of the year, 24 hours a day: call 0800 068 4141, text HOPE to 88247, or email [email protected]. 💜 #HOPELINE247 #SuicidePrevention #Confidentiality #Intervention

    • I need support, but I’m worried about confidentiality:
"How does confidentiality work on HOPELINE247, and when would you intervene?”
    • HOPELINE247 is a confidential, but not anonymous, service. We can usually see the number you call from, unless you choose to access our service anonymously. Giving your name is optional: your name will be kept confidential unless we need to intervene in the event of an emergency.
    • Ony you and our advisers can access your plan when you are on a call. Any calls to our service will not show up on your phone bill.

Our advisers usually take notes during your call, which are kept confidential: this is to help support you should you ever need to call us again. However, this is optional. If you’re not comfortable with this, please let your adviser know.
    • If you share thoughts of suicide with us or say you are suicidal but are not at immediate risk, we would not intervene, and all our contact with you will remain strictly confidential – unless there is a safeguarding issue.

A safeguarding issue occurs if you, or someone you’re concerned about, is at risk of harm from somebody else.
    • We would only intervene if you or somebody else is at immediate risk of harm, or have taken steps to end your (or their) life.

However, we would always try to have a conversation with you first, before taking any steps to intervene.

  • There’s a reason we didn’t comment yesterday on the ONS suicide statistics for 2023… We know from speaking to young people that reading statistics around suicide can be scary, and we didn’t want to overwhelm or alarm anyone by adding to the conversation yesterday. Suicide statistics are always sobering. We also know that behind every statistic is a human, with dreams, ambitions and struggles, just like any one of us. It didn’t feel right to approach the conversation in a statistical way. We want to remember the people behind the numbers. We know that to galvanise the government to help reduce suicide in young people – of course we need to refer to statistics – but the statistics on suicide in under 35s for the whole of the UK are not yet complete. So, for now, we continue to work with young people, to empower them to keep themselves safe from suicide. And we continue to admire the bravery of every young person who reaches out to us for support. What we will say is this… Regardless of the ONS statistics that were released yesterday, we know that the suicide rate in young people is far too high. We exist to save young lives from suicide. Today, we redouble our efforts to act, and we look forward to continuing our work with local, regional and national government to bring these tragic numbers down. If you’re reading this and you’re struggling with thoughts of suicide right now, know that PAPYRUS is here for life. There is hope, we are here, and we always will be. #SuicidePrevention

Will, Bobby and Harvey completed the 3 Peaks Challenge within 24 hours in loving memory of their friend Jack Thomas, whom they lost last year. Through the challenge, they raised an incredible £3,000 in aid of PAPYRUS! We're so grateful for all their hard work and support. 💜 Also in the Peak District, Amy, family and friends climbed Scafell Pike at 1am. They even had to attempt it alone as their guide didn't turn up - but they did it. They've raised over £1,800 in memory of their beloved Lucy! 💜 Julian and his friends completed the incredible Chase the Sun South Bike Ride Challenge, cycling over 200 miles in one day. They have raised over £2,900 through their challenge - what an amazing achievement! Everyone at Team PAPYRUS is so appreciative of all their hard work. 💜 Fundraising doesn’t just have to be exercise – it can be anything! Flayme, alongside 3 other tattoo artists hosted a tattoo fundraising day including a raffle, bake sale and tattooing all in aid of PAPYRUS! They raised an incredible £2,443 for PAPYRUS. We are so grateful for their incredibly creative fundraising and the difference they have made. 💜 A big thank you to Gregory who has raised an incredible amount for PAPYRUS by completing the incredible Pinnacle Ridge Extreme challenge, which is 28km long and has a 2700m ascent in the lake district. Thank you Gregory for your bravery and support.💜 Earlier in August we were at Wickenby Airfield in Lincoln to watch our wonderful Wing Walkers take to the skies raising over £5,000 between them. A massive thank you to everyone who took part – you’re all so brave and what an incredible achievement! 💜 Blundells Hill Golf Club have raised an incredible £5,451 over the past two years in support of PAPYRUS! • 📣 PAPYRUS WEEKLY ROUND UP📣 Last Thursday, PAPYRUS had a stall in Paddington station in London to raise awareness about mental health/suicide; especially for students dealing with anxiety or coping with exam results. Lois, one of our Marketing and Communications Officer, also interviewed members of the public for an upcoming video about changing the narrative on suicide! Oxford Sixth Form College now has 19 more amazing ASIST trained caregivers! PAPYRUS staff Mandy and Rosie delivered their training and cannot thank the group enough for their hard work and participation over the two days. Our wonderful fundraiser, Katy (known as Saddle to Sea), completed her last 100km leg, after cycling (and swimming) around Britain’s coastline to get people talking about suicide, support and positive mental health. Katy has helped make the world a stronger place and has brought together so many people by spreading hope across the country. We had a stand on Saturday at the Blyth Pride Action North Event! This was an incredible opportunity to share the work we do at PAPYRUS to the local community and even give the Metro Gnomes some PAPYRUS wristbands! PAPYRUS volunteers, Chloe and Janet, along with Community Development Officer, Phil, attended the 2024 Belfast Mela Day. It was a great day witnessing communities united in celebrating multiculturalism across Northern Ireland and spreading the word about suicide prevention to new audiences. #WeArePAPYRUS #SuicidePrevention

For too long, suicide has been surrounded by a culture of silence. Now is the time to change the narrative. There are plenty of ways in which you can support PAPYRUS; and within this pack, we have shared some of the ways that you can make an impact on the day. Join us in changing the narrative and help us to #SmashTheStigma around suicide this World Suicide Prevention Day. 💜 #SuicidePrevention #WeArePAPYRUS #WSPD24 #StartTheConversation

  • 💭 DEBUNKING COMMON MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SUICIDE 💜MYTH: Talking about suicide will give someone the idea to do it FACT: Talking openly about suicide can help reduce stigma and the risk of harm. By talking about suicide, we can encourage help-seeking behaviour and support those who need it. Ask directly and offer a listening ear. 💜MYTH: Only people with a mental health diagnosis are at risk of suicide FACT: Many individuals with mental health conditions are not affected by suicidal thoughts, and not all people who feel suicidal have a mental health diagnosis. Suicide can impact anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. Many factors can contribute to suicidal ideation, such as relationship problems, financial stress, chronic pain, substance abuse and changes in everyday life - things we are all exposed to. 💜MYTH: Suicidal ideation is just a way to get attention FACT: This is simply not true. People who experience suicidal thoughts are often in immense emotional pain and do not want attention. Many people who die by suicide have kept their thoughts and intentions a secret. It's essential to take all talk of suicide seriously and respond with compassion and support. 💜MYTH: Once someone has decided to take their life, you can not change their mind FACT: Many people who have survived a suicide attempt later report feeling grateful for being alive. For many people with suicidal thoughts, it can be because they do not want to or feel they can continue living their current life. Offering support, understanding, and a non-judgemental ear and connecting them with the appropriate help they need can make a significant difference. 💜MYTH: Suicidal thoughts always lead to a suicide attempt FACT: Suicidal thoughts are not uncommon and do not necessarily mean someone will act on them. In the UK, 1 in 5 people will experience suicidal thoughts. It's important to take all suicidal thoughts seriously and signpost people to the services that can help them with their feelings. 💜MYTH: There is no way to tell if someone is feeling suicidal FACT: Many people who experience suicidal thoughts will showcase what we call suicidal 'invitations' (signs). That is why we must be aware of what these invitations might look like and how we can approach the conversation about suicide sensitively when we notice them. We have lots of information about this on our website. 💜MYTH: When someone dies by suicide, they have 'committed' a crime FACT: Suicide has not been illegal since 1961 in England and Wales. The phrase "committed suicide" is no longer appropriate and can add stigma around suicide. 💜MYTH: If someone is talking about their suicidal thoughts, they won't act on them FACT: Talking about suicide can be a plea for help. Don't assume that someone won't act on their thoughts if they talk openly about suicide. ALWAYS take suicidal feelings seriously. #LearnonLinkedIn #SuicidePrevention
