AI can help us to develop high quality work, including SLRs for publication – that’s the conclusion from a recent article I have written with Oxford PharmaGenesis colleagues Richard White and Tomas Rees. It’s something I’ve been spending a lot of time on recently, working to understand how and where #AI can help, by stage and type of review, understanding the checks and balances that we need to put into place, upskilling and starting to use in practice. Of course, publication is only one route for a good SLR and many of the points apply to the large, complex literature reviews we see across our HEOR work. Say if you are interested in finding out more. #Oxford PharmaGenesis https://lnkd.in/eVi-dbBx AI Tools for Systematic Literature Reviews | the Map (ismpp-newsletter.com)

Would you spend one night outdoors to help fight homelessness? On Thursday 10 October, I’m taking part in the #CEOSleepout, joining other local business leaders in spending a night in Oxford’s University Parks in aid of Oxfordshire Homeless Movement (OHM). Why not sign up and come along? It may be chilly, but helping raise money for such a worthwhile cause should create a warming glow. All you need is a big heart and a willingness to raise £1000. Core costs of the event are covered by a donor, so every pound raised will go directly to deserving initiatives like the Lived Experience Advisory Forum, Making Houses into Homes, women-only services and supporting people with no recourse to public funds. Please join me in swapping your business suit for a sleeping bag. I very much hope to see you then! https://lnkd.in/eWCjHqHf

🤖 What are the considerations around using #AI to develop #SystematicLiteratureReviews for publication? Our new article in the September edition of ISMPP's official newsletter, The MAP, explores the reasons why healthcare study authors are turning to AI for large and complex SLRs. https://lnkd.in/emd8Jzda With increasing interest in reviews that are rapidly updated, and that cover a wide and increasing evidence base, we see increasing demands on the resources needed to develop these reviews. AI can help with: ⬆ scale/volume of evidence ⏱ efficiency ✅ quality 🧠 understanding of some SLRs. But it's important to consider the risks and implications around confidential or commercially sensitive information, and the accuracy and potential biases of AI output. Check out the #OxfordPharmaGenesis article for more considerations, principles and existing guidelines for the use of AI in SLRs for publication. #HealthScience #ISMPP ISMPP (International Society for Medical Publication Professionals)

We have had the absolute pleasure of recently collaborating with Oxford PharmaGenesis to help their workforce understand a little more around Dementia in line with World Alzheimer’s Day. Take a read below of the wonderful feedback received from Amie Bawa, people and culture advisor at Oxford PharmaGenesis “Marking World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September, Oxford PharmaGenesis recently collaborated with Care UK to raise awareness of dementia and to support those with family or friends who are affected. Vicki Lambourne, Senior Customer Relations Manager at Care UK, provided us with an insightful discussion of dementia’s impact on the brain, behavioural changes that can occur as a result of dementia, and how to respond to these behaviours while ensuring the safety and support of the individual. Care UK also shared several support guides and information resources on dementia, which have received positive engagement and feedback from our colleagues. It was a pleasure working with Vicki and Hannah (Marketing Manager at Care UK), and we look forward to continuing to witness Care UK’s positive impact.” Hannah Atherley #dementia #alzheimersawareness #CareUk #OxfordPharmaGenisis.

Are journal data sharing requirements challenging for #Pharma companies who support open research principles? 📖 Journal policies increasingly request open sharing of patient-level data. 💊 However, multiple factors influence the feasibility and appropriateness of sharing patient-level data from pharma-sponsored research. 🙋♀️ Disconnects between journal mandates and pharma policies for appropriate patient-level data sharing had led to anecdotal reports of delayed publication of pharma-sponsored research. To explore this further and identify unnecessary barriers to timely research publication, Open Pharma developed a 10-question global survey to help answer an important question: 'Do anecdotal reports of challenges complying with journal data sharing policies reflect a common and complex reality for pharma-sponsored research?' Read our carousel to discover what they learned! You can find a link to the full survey and a video presentation of results at the end of the carousel. Open Pharma is a multi-sponsor collaboration facilitated by #OxfordPharmaGenesis that aims to drive positive change in the communication of pharma-sponsored research.

A very #pinksocks worthy visit to Paris for the 36th WCA - World Congress of Audiology, where I will be leading a discussion on the Living Guidelines for Adult Cochlear Implantation. Having severe hearing loss and wearing bilateral hearing aids myself, I know all too well that the journey for hard-of-hearing people to adequate hearing care can be long and difficult. But it is an important one, because untreated hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline, social isolation and an increased risk of dementia. The Living Guidelines are exactly what their name indicates - practice guidelines for health professionals on hearing treatment that are updated whenever new research or standards of care emerge - and should be an essential point of reference for adaptation and adoption in every country. Come and talk to me to find out more! #WCAParis2024 #LivingGuidelines #HearingHealth #OxfordPharmaGenesis #HearingLoss

I recently attended my first Australasian Medical Writers Association Conference - 'Keeping it Real'. 🌟✍️ Diving into the world of #MedicalWriting, I had the opportunity to meet and network with fellow medical writers who share my passion for healthcare communications. The conference agenda was packed with insightful presentations and engaging workshops. Some of my personal highlights include: ⚪ Dr Brad McKay kicking off the conference by 'Pulling back the curtain' to reveal the tricks used to spread medical misinformation. His keynote address truly underscored the responsibility we have, as medical and health writers, to use our words to inform the public, guide healthcare professionals, shape conversations, and influence policy. ⚪ A hands-on workshop by Darren Goossens from Biotext, where I learned innovative strategies for making data-rich documents more accessible using clear communication and visual storytelling. ⚪ An eye-opening session on AI in medicine by Daniel Capurro, MD PhD from the University of Melbourne. His talk emphasized that achieving high diagnostic accuracy with AI algorithms is not the same as improving patient outcomes, igniting important conversations about the future role of AI in healthcare. ⚪ The day wrapped up with an engaging and humorous session by Justin Coleman, who demonstrated effective ways to captivate audiences and keep readers hooked on every word. I'm coming away from this conference with fantastic new connections and skills, and a deeper understanding and appreciation of the industry I work in. A big thank you to Oxford PharmaGenesis for giving me the opportunity to attend the conference, and a shout out to my colleague Michael Molloy-Bland who was the chair of the AWMA 2024 conference organizing committee! For those interested in joining a community of medical writers, I can't recommend AMWA enough. You'll find a supportive network with a shared love of medical writing. #MedicalCommunications #Healthwriting #ScienceCommunication #AMWA #ProfessionalDevelopment #Networking #OxfordPharmaGenesis
AMWA Conference 2024 - 'Keeping it Real' A huge success! We're delighted to report that the conference at Monash Convention Centre was very well attended. There were many familiar faces, as well as new ones. The day had a great vibe and was rich with informative speakers, engaging workshops and excellent networking opportunities. We've had excellent feedback from those who attended, with many also asking where next year's conference will be! As always, we couldn't have done it without the valuable support of our sponsors: Biotext, Research Review Australia, Wiser Healthcare, ISMPP (International Society for Medical Publication Professionals) and Kainic Medical Communications. We are very grateful for your continued support of AMWA.

At yesterday's Friends of the National Library of Medicine Gala in Washington DC, we were privileged to celebrate the contributions of not one, not two but three Nobel Laureates to scientific understanding and human health. In their speeches, Katalin Karikó and Özlem Türeci from BioNTech SE made it clear how their vision, tenacity and humility had resulted in scientific breakthroughs that have undoubtedly saved many lives around the world. An honour and a real pleasure to meet these inspiring human beings.
