The National Police Wellbeing Service, supporting UK police officers, staff, their families & people leaving the service

About us

At Oscar Kilo, the National Police Wellbeing Service, we understand the unique challenges faced by those working in the police and we’ve developed open access, online wellbeing resources that have been designed for policing – by policing. We want every member of the police service to feel confident that their wellbeing is taken seriously, and we’ll make sure that every force has access to the best guidance and support to provide world class wellbeing support for everyone who works for them. Along with support & guidance we’re focusing on providing resources for individual officers and staff, reducing the stigma around mental health, building resilience and improving self-help skills. Our support doesn’t stop when you leave the force. And we’re also here for the families and friends of those working in the police. The Oscar Kilo website is open access which means it doesn’t matter who you are, you can now find out about what the National Police Wellbeing Service offers and see the resources, guidance and examples of best practice that we signpost to. We’re also the only place that hosts the Blue Light Wellbeing Framework, and brings together everyone who is responsible for wellbeing within policing. Our aim is to help every member of the police service to understand how to build personal resilience, to feel confident that they can speak up when things aren’t going well and to get the best personalised support possible when they do. ** Gift pack give-away for children and young people with a loved one in policing ** A role in policing can mean parents and care givers sometimes miss family celebrations, meal times and bedtimes. This has an impact on the whole family. It can also be hard to explain to children. That’s why we’re giving away a very special gift to children and young people who have a loved one working in policing. Gift packs include a copy of new children’s book Red Robber Raid, an activity booklet, and our gorgeous Oscar dog soft toy. Red Robber Raid is beautifully written by Natasha Koncewicz, a member of the wellbeing team at Norfolk and Suffolk Constabulary, to help children understand why their parent or care giver sometimes misses out on family time. We have a limited number of gift packs available – apply now with our quick, easy form: https://lnkd.in/eWRme2X4 Find out more about the give-away here: https://lnkd.in/ek8-arMH We’d love forces to promote this give-away so families in their patch can benefit. It’s also a great opportunity to thank families for what they do and signpost them to the other family resources we have on offer at:  https://lnkd.in/e8FuMf6M

Together with the Blue Light Card Foundation and The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales we are delighted to announce an extra £100,000 of funding for The Police Treatment Centres. The recent events and incidents of disorder have been exceptional in both scale and severity, and we recognise the immediate pressure and longer-term implications this will have. In response to this we have come together with the Chief Executives of the Police Treatment Centres at Harrogate and Auchterarder, the North West Benevolent Fund in Lancashire and Flint House Police Rehabilitation in Oxfordshire, to see what we can do to support policing through these challenging times. Our shared goal is to ensure every officer or staff member injured either physically, psychologically (or both) can access timely, high-quality support now and into the future – being aware that sometimes the impact of events like these may take years to surface. This funding will help The Police Treatment Centres to increase their capacity as we anticipate more officers and staff being referred to them as a result of the events. Our Service Director Andy Rhodes said: “We are delighted that additional funding has been offered to support individuals and forces at this time. Occupational Health Units are working tirelessly to cope with a huge surge in demand and every penny of the additional funding will be spent on officers and staff to ensure nobody faces unnecessary delays getting the support and treatment they need. Police officers and staff place themselves in harm’s way and rightly expect that when they are injured the country they proudly serve will be there to help them.” Steve Denny, Chair of Trustees, Blue Light Card Foundation said: “We have seen the unprecedented police response as unrest spread across the country. Here at the Blue Light Card Foundation, we recognise those police officers and staff injured in the line of duty need our support more than ever. We are delighted to be able to work with Oscar Kilo and the Police Treatment Centres to provide funding to pay for additional treatment for those on the frontline psychologically and physically impacted by recent events."

We are proud to announce the launch of the new National Suicide Action Plan today which is now available to all police forces. This plan, endorsed by the NPCC, Police Federation, Police Superintendents Association, and Unison, aims to address and reduce suicide within policing, providing essential support to all police forces across England and Wales. The death of any member of the policing family is a tragedy. This action plan addresses suicide as a key priority and aims to coalesce ideas and actions across policing in England and Wales. Its key objectives are to:  🔹 Educate and support police forces 🔹 Improve data recording 🔹 Create a culture that supports mental health and tackles stigma 🔹 Ensure timely and appropriate support for those affected by suicide or suicidal thoughts. The plan builds on the suicide prevention consensus statement and suicide postvention toolkit to ensure we keep momentum going and continue to prioritise this as an issue. To provide additional support, we're also piloting a 24/7 mental health crisis line to provide confidential support to officers and staff in crisis. This is an important step in saving lives and offering a safe space for those who need it Everything we do to support our people’s mental health contributes to reducing suicide, but continuous work is required to drive change, raise awareness, reduce stigma, and improve data recording. You can find out more about this work on the Oscar Kilo website ⬇ https://lnkd.in/ddK9EKWV

Yesterday our Operation Hampshire lead Dave Brewster was at the UK Police Chaplaincy Conference. The event saw 100 police chaplains from across the UK coming together for three days of learning, networking and fellowship. Dave said: "It was an absolute pleasure to meet so many caring, compassionate and supportive people yesterday. "I gave a presentation to the group on the work of Oscar Kilo and more specifically Operation Hampshire. This was followed later in the afternoon by two 45 min workshops on 'influence' and 'the importance of 10 minutes' to show how meaningful and supportive first contact after an assault can make or break the victims experience. "The sessions were well attended with some very interesting and constructive suggestions and views which I will definitely be using." We will be inviting the Chaplaincy lead to speak to our Op Hampshire network later in the year to raise awareness of the role of a Chaplain and how they can offer an additional layer of support. You can find out more about Op Hampshire here https://lnkd.in/epfaawvF

An 18-month sleep, fatigue and recovery biometrics pilot programme run in Merseyside Police by the UK’s National Police Wellbeing Service (Oscar Kilo UK) and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) has received funding to undertake an evaluation of the benefits of wearable technology, with a view to rolling out a toolkit across the service, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports. ❝We wanted to get into understanding how wearable technology combined with other supportive systems can contribute to improving the situation for our people. We’ve managed to build a system that’s 100% confidential, a no compromise thing for us.❞ - Andy Rhodes OBE QPM, Oscar Kilo ❝The package is very much around it being personalised – the data picks up some things, but more importantly it is qualitative. It’s not the metrics that are important, but the perception of those metrics. They are quality of life not medical issues.❞ - Dr Carol Cox, LMJU ❝The programme doesn’t suggest it’s all about individual responsibility. We are saying that we are going to try to do something about the organisational issues that can contribute to poor sleep fatigue recovery and wellbeing as well.❞ - Andy Rhodes, Oscar Kilo [SUBSCRIBER ARTICLE] https://lnkd.in/eCGaaaZM #lawenforcement #policing #police #wellbeing #technology #biometrics #wearabletechnology
