Offshore Energies UK welcomes renewable energy boost for prospective windfarm developers 👇 Thibaut Cheret, OEUK’s Wind and Renewables Manager said: "North Sea energy from oil and gas is a British industrial success story. Given the right investment environment our members will create a similar industrial success story from the energy transition, unlocking more than £200 billion in private capital before 2030, as well as helping to secure our domestic energy security and protect jobs.  We can only achieve these ambitious wind targets if we begin to deploy floating wind at scale offshore by 2030, using the early opportunities presented from the INTOG licences. This will require an alignment of industrial and energy strategies to benefit the UK economy. Our penultimate breakfast briefing of the year took place this morning, themed around financing the transition. The decarbonisation of the UK economy can be one of the greatest opportunities of our time but it is a choice to choose a homegrown energy transition. We all agree the transition will require a significant amount of capital of which the lions share will come from the private sector. How we attract this investment and how we finance this activity has been at the heart of the debate for decades. 2024 will be an important year for the transition to net-zero and the finance transition underway is at the heart of this We heard from industry experts and explored how the UK can deliver this and what it takes to finance these opportunities in the current economic environment. We were delighted to host a panel event at #SNP24 in Edinburgh this weekend.    We were joined by SNP Westminster Leader Stephen Flynn MP, the Acting Minister for Climate Action Dr Alasdair Allan MSP, and Professor Paul de Leeuw.    Scotland’s industrial heritage will be essential in the race to net zero, and the discussion was a fantastic opportunity to highlight how a homegrown energy transition has the potential to boost skills and investment in Scotland as well as the need for long term supportive policy.   By choosing a homegrown energy transition, we can protect skills, secure investment, and maximise sustainability. Let’s unleash our potential, and power our future. Today, we release modelling data to show how the government’s proposed changes to the tax regime will impact the oil and gas industry and damage its ability to contribute to the UK economy. The modelling previously with the Treasury shows the Government’s proposed fiscal policy would result in a loss in economic value of around £13 billion compared to the economic contribution generated under the current windfall tax regime. Should the policy go ahead, oil and gas producers are expected to reduce capital investment in UK projects as they become economically unviable. Capital investments over the period 2025-2029 are expected to fall to £2 billion compared to around £14 billion under the current tax regime. The analysis shows that while the expected tax take from UK oil and gas producers would increase in the very short term, ultimately it would result in a loss for the Treasury compared to the current regime. This is due to a rapid decline in North Sea oil and gas production due to under investment over this decade. The analysis confirms the impact would be felt widely across the economy. The UK needs to leverage the strengths of its offshore energy industry, put homegrown innovation and technology at the heart of its net zero ambitions, and ensure the UK is globally attractive for energy investment. Instead, the government’s proposed policy will undermine the UK offshore energy sector’s ability to support the Government’s overarching goal of driving economic growth and achieving a low carbon future.
