Amazing to be at the Fabian Society and PLSA roundtable yesterday. It was great to meet Minister for Pensions Emma Reynolds, MP and discuss the Pension Review and the latest Fabian research on the State Pension. 🎤Things I said: 🎯We can all agree the current AE policy could work better and savers are not hitting the Pension Commission targets. Govt need to focus on defining what adequacy looks like at retirement for future savers and then work backwards, establishing outcome based measures. 🎯It’s great to have a very clear vision from govt on the Pensions Review with two linked objectives: drive investment in UK growth and create better retirement outcomes for future pensioners. 🎯Now, we must have a clear, detailed and long-term roadmap to help us achieve this vision. This needs to be a collaborative effort working with members, member based organisations, employers, pension providers and govt to find solutions that works for everyone, including the lowest earners and smallest employers. 🎯We understand that there are many trade offs which is which is why a clear roadmap will help bring stability and predictability for everyone. 👂Things I heard and loved (there were many more): 🎯We need to be able to help savers more using our knowledge and experience in pensions without fear of straying into advice territory. 🎯We need to focus on default journeys in decumulation (spending phase) as we have in the accumulation (savings phase). The current AE system supports savers all the way until they want to retire and then they are largely left on their own to make all sorts of important choices about life after work that may feel overwhelming. 🎯We need to stop using words like accumulation and decumulation! Let’s sort out pension jargon once and for all. Language is a barrier to understanding and understanding is a barrier to engagement.
