Among the Chancellor of the Exchequer's announcements today was a commitment to a new Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing fund and promises to protect R&D funding in core areas. The NHSA welcomes this emphasis on supporting life sciences but we hope to see future commitments to investment in the North's health sciences to address the imbalance in R&D funding in our region compared to the South. Coastal, rural and areas in the North of England are less able to withstand and recover from adverse events, according to new Health Equity North research which highlights regional disparities in community resilience. The analysis shows that regionally, Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East had the lowest resilience scores, while London and the South East had the highest. In addition, rural and coastal areas showed significantly lower resilience compared to urban and inland areas of the country. Led by academics from Health Equity North (HEN), The University of Manchester and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Greater Manchester (ARC-GM), the study examined local authority data to identify geographical patterns in different communities’ ability to navigate and thrive in the face of prolonged challenges. The timely findings come off the back of a number of “chronic shocks” in the UK including the global financial crisis, the social and economic impacts of leaving the European Union, the COVID-19 pandemic and an ongoing cost of living crisis. Health Equity North directors have joined over 40 other experts in signing an open letter, written by The Association Of Directors of Public Health (UK), urging the Government to increase funding for public health ahead of this month’s budget. Signatories include Hannah Davies Kate Pickett Professor Clare Bambra, Professor David Taylor-Robinson & Dr Luke Munford
Ahead of this month's #Budget2024, we have sent a letter to the Prime Minister and Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, signed by over 45 health experts and organisations to urge the #Gvt to increase funding for public health. Prof. Kevin Fenton CBE, President UK Faculty of Public Health, said: “By investing in primary and secondary preventative services led by public health teams at [all] levels and supported by the Public Health Grant, this Government has the opportunity to take meaningful action on prevention and early intervention.” Fiona Howie, Chief Exec Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), said: “Homes, places and environments have a powerful influence over health. If the Government wants to help people stay healthy it must take a cross-departmental approach to ensure that health is prioritised in all policies, including national planning policy.” Jacob Lant, Chief Exec of National Voices, said: "We are pleased to show our support for ADPH’s joint letter to the Prime Minister and Chancellor today and echo its call for a cross-government approach to reduce the gap in healthy life expectancy, of which public health will play a vital role." 👀 Read the letter in full ➡ http://adph.org.uk

Congratulations to Teesside University on the opening of their new National Horizons Centre, which will enable researchers to deliver genetic material like DNA into cells – a key factor in gene therapy.
Our national centre of excellence for bioscience and healthcare, National Horizons Centre, has launched a new affordable service to accelerate gene therapy development 🧬 VecTUs focuses on removing the need for re-optimisation of gene therapy after early proof-of-concept studies. The result? 🚀 Speedier translation of products to clinic 💰 Slashed development costs ❤ A reduction in time taken to benefit patients 💬 Professor Linda Popplewell, Professor of Genetic Medicine at the National Horizons Centre, said: "This will accelerate gene therapy development for many whilst producing cost savings."
