Every year we mark transgender awareness week - an opportunity for transgender people and allies to raise awareness and share stories and experiences. Matthew Harper, clinical coder and lead for our LGBTQ+ staff network, was joined by group chief people officer Rachael Metcalf in raising the transgender flag outside the University Hospital of North Tees today. Group chief executive Stacey Hunter will also be holding a special discussion for staff tomorrow lunchtime - an invitation has been sent over email. #transgenderawareness

As Stoptober, the annual NHS campaign to encourage smokers to quit the habit, comes to an end, two of our young patients have won a special prize for their artistic poster designs. Patients on the children’s ward of the University Hospital of North Tees took part in a competition to design their own ‘no smoking’ poster. Pranaya Chenna, 7, from Stillington, and Phoebe Kelly, aged 13, from Ingleby Barwick, were judged the winners of the 7-10 age and 11-16 age category competitions! The talented duo, how are no longer being treated on the ward, popped into the hospital today to see their posters being displayed and to receive a special prize of an art set and voucher. Beth Swanson selected the winning designs. Beth said: “Young people like Phoebe and Pranaya are from a generation that we hope will never succumb to smoking. “There is nothing positive about smoking and younger people know that. That’s why our tobacco dependency team and children’s ward staff ran this fun competition – so the voices of these young people can help encourage the older generation to quit smoking for good.” Asked why she’d never smoke, Phoebe said: “I wouldn’t smoke because I’m a dancer. It’s just so bad for you!” https://lnkd.in/ecGnDWb4

Medicine is a universal language, spoken by students from all corners of the globe. Every year, at North Tees and Hartlepool we welcome medical students from Newcastle and Sunderland Universities. Many students live locally, however some come from across the world far and wide – each bringing their unique experiences, cultures, and perspectives. Our education suites at both North Tees and Hartlepool have maps so we can see where our students call home. Whether that’s Teesside, down south or further afield including Sri Lanka, Chicago, Hong Kong and Libya. Vikki Noble, clinical undergraduate manager, said: “We support our students with orientation programmes, student councils, peer support groups and pastoral mentors. And in turn, they each bring with them their cultural backgrounds, languages, and experiences, enriching our workforce and culture. “The journey of medical students from far-flung corners of the world is more than just a quest for knowledge; it's a journey of cultural exchange, resilience, and hope. “These future doctors are proof that medicine is a field without borders, and their contributions will shape the future of healthcare globally.”

Patients treated for issues with their pancreas came along to an education day our health teams held recently. The pancreas, an organ that sits behind the stomach in the body, produces enzymes (to break down and digest food) and hormones (like insulin and glucagon) to control blood sugar levels. Pancreatitis is a condition where the pancreas becomes swollen and inflamed. https://lnkd.in/eVT9ChaH
