The third Times Earth Summit took place this October, sponsored by L'Oréal and National Grid, and was set against a backdrop of the biggest election year in history, with over half of the world's population casting a vote in 2024. The governments voted in this year will hold power during a crucial period for the net zero transition: a time when emissions have to start declining. This transition will be theirs to accelerate, and all our futures will be affected by whether or not they do so. This full-day summit featured panel sessions and keynote speakers from sustainability experts across politics, policy and business. In the morning we heard from Chris Stark Head of ‘Mission Control’ for Clean Power 2030, UK department for Energy Security and Net Zero about the new government's plans to deliver 100% clean energy by 2030. Later in the day, we spoke with Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, on his plans to make London’s waterways clean enough to be swimmable within a decade, and from Dr. Frederike Otto, Senior Lecturer in Climate Science at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, who will outline how decisive actions over the next few years could shape the trajectory of climate change and discuss her critical work at the frontiers of climate science. We heard from Rob Salter-Church, Director of Regulation National Grid to consider the opportunities of getting the energy transition right and how it will reindustrialise parts of the country. And we heard from businesses including Natalia Agathou, Sustainability Director for L’Oreal UK about how they have worked to continue driving the net zero transition.
