New Economics Foundation reposted this
I've got a new blog up for the New Economics Foundation and I'd say it's one of my better ones! With the new energy price cap incoming, we looked at how energy bills are structured around the world, and how governments do and don't protect access to energy for essential needs. Europe was split during the energy price spike, some governments put a large discount on an initial block of household energy for essential consumption whereas others, like the UK, put more modest discounts on *all* consumption. Those in the latter camp, passed a much bigger discount to unnecessary consumption and higher-income households. That was a crisis response. But outside Europe it's normal to discount initial 'essential' energy and increase the costs of additional 'luxury' consumpion. It's good enough for the Japanese and South Koreans, why not us? Outside Europe it's normal to protect basic energy needs - so why don't we?

Did you know that most people on the planet have their basic energy needs protected by cheaper tariffs? Tomorrow, Ofgem is expected to announce that the energy price cap will increase to £1,568. The energy crisis of the past few years should be a wake-up call - we need to change how we charge people for the basic gas and electricity they need to survive. Read our new piece no how a National Energy Guarantee can bring the UK in step with the rest of the world. https://lnkd.in/e4HMHRWr

NEW: As the government prepares to decide whether London City airport can expand its passenger numbers, our analysis found that over half of journeys taken from the airport would take under six hours by train. Expanding passenger numbers is likely to have minimal economic benefit, but will hurt local communities and our ability to tackle climate change. It would be a mistake for the government to approve it. https://lnkd.in/eJB3XyHu
