Get to know the NAWIC Committee: Meet Cristina Lanz Azcarate, Co-founding Director at atelier EURA Ltd. Cristina co-created Atelier EURA, a design studio specialising in Interior Design and Architecture. She has been a key figure within NAWIC, having chaired the London and South East Region between 2013 and 2022, and now continues to contribute as a committee member. Currently, she’s responsible for organising events, writing blog posts, and designing for The Image of Women in Construction project. Her passion for supporting diverse talent in the built environment is central to her work with NAWIC. With over 20 years of experience in strategic land masterplanning, development appraisals, design, and project delivery, Marianna has an impressive portfolio including significant projects like Elstree Studios and Crown Works Studios. Marianna has been actively involved with NAWIC for 11 years, serving 7 of those as Deputy Chair for London and South East and for the last 3 years as Treasurer. Her focus is on developing strategies to attract and retain women in the construction industry, while ensuring our events stay relevant and accessible for everyone. Earlier this week, Charlie Sander and I had the privilege of attending UK Construction Week as part of NAWIC North East and Tees Valley. I was honoured to speak on the Culture Hub stage alongside Amy Turner, Jemma Quin BEng CEng MICE and Charlie (as Chair) on an important panel about inspiring new talent and fostering an inclusive environment within the construction industry. A big thank you to NAWIC Midlands for inviting us to collaborate in this vital discussion, which focused on the critical role of mentors, allies and role models in driving the cultural change needed in our sector. We also had the chance to network and attend some fantastic talks. I’ve taken so much away from the show, including: 🟢 15% representation of women in construction has stagnated for over 20 years. Just 16% of these women are in senior roles. The Office for National Statistics even reported a loss of 70,000 women in the industry in 2023 with 10,000 leaving in the last quarter. 🟢 Workplace policies need a rethink. Not only does this make a more inclusive environment, companies that update policies to attract and retain a more diverse workforce report profits 25% above the average. 🟢 Look back as you move forward - support and mentor those following in your footsteps. 🟢 We need to change what success looks like - overworking is inefficient, leads to burnout and signals poor resource planning. 🟢 Never stop learning & knowledge sharing - with competence comes confidence!
