How on earth do you ‘rewiggle’ a river? 🤔 Recently we teamed up with Oxygen Conservation, an organisation founded with the aim of tackling climate change and biodiversity loss through Scaling Conservation, to conduct eDNA surveys of the River Thet at their Shropham Estate in Norfolk. The 694-acre former traditional farm includes approximately 2km of the River Thet, which has been historically straightened and confined to serve agricultural needs. Oxygen Conservation set out to restore this section of river to a more natural, dynamic state, potentially reconnecting it with its floodplain to create a thriving wetland ecosystem. Traditional survey methods were considered too invasive, resource-intensive, and limited in scope to meet the challenges of the sensitive habitat. Oxygen Conservation needed an innovative approach that could provide a holistic view of the river's biodiversity to inform their restoration strategy, while also addressing concerns about invasive species and habitat connectivity. In light of this, our eDNA surveys were commissioned to establish a robust biodiversity baseline before implementing any river restoration plans, with the detailed data gathered on fish, mammals and aquatic invertebrates guiding the groundwork. The eDNA surveys revealed rich biodiversity in the River Thet and surrounding habitats. A total of 54 vertebrate species were detected, with 72.2% identified to species level. This included 14 fish taxa, with the European eel – an IUCN Red List critically endangered species - detected in 4 out of 12 samples. With the data secured through eDNA surveys, we’re delighted to say that the project has been a huge success - with Dan Johnson, Head of Environment at Oxygen Conservation, stating that “the eDNA surveys have provided us with an incredible wealth of biodiversity data that will be instrumental in shaping our restoration plans for the River Thet. The ability to detect such a wide range of species, from fish to invertebrates, gives us a comprehensive understanding of the environmental ground zero.” Find out more about our work with Oxygen Conservation via: https://lnkd.in/exNEvnKC

In our recent eDNA webinar, hosted by our in-house experts Joe and Chris, we dug into what’s possible when using our technology out in the field 🌱 eDNA allows us to understand and track the recovery of soil microbiomes, something that with traditional monitoring methods is near impossible to do. Enter: Restoration Tracker - a product that’s set to transform how we measure and monitor ecosystem restoration. Restoration Tracker is our solution to this long-standing challenge of monitoring restoration projects. It offers a standardised approach that's scientifically robust, easy to interpret, with wide applicability - solving age-old problems faced by ecologists. It’s been designed to function across multiple ecosystem types, currently covering over 70% of the terrestrial realm. From heathlands to tropical and temperate forests, and savannas, the broad scope of Restoration Tracker enables something we've never had before: the ability to quantify restoration progress across diverse projects, even in different parts of the world. Did someone say a new Nature Tech Alliance white paper has been launched?! Nature won’t wait - and even a sudden tropical storm downpour in Colombia couldn’t stop Benjamin and Pippa from getting to the Bloom24 NTA white paper launch at #COP16 last week! Going beyond traditional panel discussions, the event provided an immersive experience for the attendees, bringing together a global community of sustainability thought leaders and practitioners to discuss how the white paper’s findings can equip businesses with the tools and insights to lead in a new area of nature reporting. With only six years left to meet global biodiversity goals, COP16 takes on a critical role in translating ambition into action. From "do no harm" → "nature positive". The new white paper reveals how 18 corporations have been tackling biodiversity reporting head-on - with the likes of Nestlé and Unilever leading the charge with new approaches to drive measurable change. This whitepaper from the Nature Tech Alliance (NatureMetrics, Salesforce, ERM and Planet) highlights seven critical insights that every corporate sustainability and technology leader needs to know to drive actionable change in the sector - and you can download it right here: https://ow.ly/nNNw50TSiYK

1,500 fungal species, 50 soil samples, 190,000 hectares to be restored across Colombia. Picture this -> A vast expanse of degraded savanna in Colombia's Vichada region. Now, imagine transforming it into a thriving forest ecosystem. That's exactly what InverBosques - Gerencia de Proyectos Forestales and Trafigura are doing across 190,000 hectares. But how do you measure restoration success when much of the change happens invisibly, in the soil? Enter our eDNA technology. With just 50 soil samples, we've mapped the recovery of entire fungal communities, tracking the shift from plant pathogens to beneficial mycorrhizal networks that support forest growth. This data isn't just cool – it's guiding real-world decisions on the ground with plans to scale-up soil sampling effort in 2024 and also add on aquatic eDNA sampling to get an even fuller picture of ecosystem recovery. The impacts of this data so far include: - Validating the "restoration bridge" concept of using Eucalyptus as a transitional species - Informing decisions on when to introduce native species based on soil health - Strengthening carbon credit verification processes - Enabling more accurate biodiversity net gain calculations So, what does the future hold? The success of this approach has led to plans to scale-up soil sampling efforts in 2024, with with 80 more soil samples being taken this autumn and the addition of aquatic eDNA sampling to build an even fuller picture of ecosystem recovery. Want to see how eDNA is shaping the future of large-scale ecosystem restoration? With Colombia hosting this year’s #COP16 it’s the perfect time to explore this restoration success story in full: https://lnkd.in/ezcYJy8m

Recent discussions at COP 16 sessions have been quite focused on measurement and metrics but have sadly been largely been presented at a high desktop level - what we desperately need is high quality primary data, ground-truthed at the site level to make better management decisions for biodiversity. The added advantage is that this data is well aligned for feeding into TNFD, CSRD disclosure and other reporting requirements. So, just a reminder that if you are attending COP16, join us for this breakfast session in the Small Room, Nature Positive Pavilion on 27th October at 8:00 -8:50am for a practical hands-on deep dive into how this primary data can be generated by anyone from eDNA sampling and utilised for biodiversity monitoring and reporting across mining portfolios. Coffee and refreshments will be available. #COP16 If you’re here, we want to see you- we no longer have a booth so we are agile 🐆 ☔️ It has been surreal- the biggest gathering of biodiversity decision makers in the world 🌍 / and arriving soaked to the 🦴 yesterday morning after a tropical storm ⛈️ Seeing so many people together in person trying to figure out how we can halt and reverse biodiversity loss is humbling. 🐝 Stumbling across people I see only via LinkedIn and realising they are just as excellent in person is a buzz. This shared mission brings with it a lot of hope, but also a huge amount of challenges. The Nature Positive Initiative pavillion was the place to be yesterday with Gavin Edwards, Marco Lambertini et al., putting on a full day of events. Particularly enjoyed Tim Christophersen mention navigating the ‘ego-nomics’ involved when implementing nature strategies. What would I like to see? Corporates demonstrating their work to #monitor, #baseline and track #biodiversity through time then using that to inform decision making. So much talk on #data #metrics #impact, #materiality, but nobody I’ve seen with an example to share…? The NatureMetrics #Cali Crew grew as our asset Dr Vere Ross-Gillespie finally touched down. We are now Pippa Howard, Benjamin Barca and Sander Keulen. Good to see you Sylvain Vaquer, Yoni Pasternak, Jenny Hughes, Mahima Sukhdev, Samuel Sinclair, Cain Blythe, Samantha Lacey, Warwick Mostert and many others!
