Connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while making the energy system clean, fair, and affordable.
About us
National Grid lies at the heart of a transforming energy system. Our business areas play a vital role in connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while continually seeking ways to make the energy system clean, fair, and affordable. In the UK we own and develop the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales, taking electricity from where it’s generated to where it’s needed. National Grid Electricity Distribution delivers electricity to over 20 million people across homes and businesses in the Midlands, South West England, and South Wales. In the US, we own and operate electricity and natural gas networks, serving over 20 million people across New York State and Massachusetts. National Grid Ventures operates across the UK, Europe, and the US, developing, operating, and investing in large-scale clean energy infrastructure. National Grid Partners invests in entrepreneurs at the intersection of energy and emerging tech, with capital, resources, connections, and know-how.

Earlier this summer, our team uncovered FOUR roundhouses along with a whopping 14 kilos of artefacts during the 'North Wessex Downs Visual Impact Provision' project for National Grid in Wiltshire. Along with iron slag and a bone weaving tool, we found a whole lot of pottery, some of which had been carefully decorated with fingernail impressions. We suspect the site may be connected to the nearby Roundway Hillfort, once an impressive and imposing Iron Age settlement. ⚱️ 👷♀️ One sherd in particular bears curiously crude doodles. Were these first attempts? Or were these markings made by a child? These finds are now in the hands of our specialists for further analysis. Matt, who led the dig, told us all about it. 👇

I always enjoy a chat with Emma Pinchbeck, but what an honour it was to do that on stage at this year's Energy UK Annual Conference. We've had lots of big targets and ambitious goals, and it was great to hear so many reflect on the immense progress made. But clean power by 2030 is as big as they come. At National Grid, we’re laser-focused on building the grid infrastructure we need to connect new clean energy projects and decarbonise as quickly as possible. We’re already delivering, but to go further, faster it's going to take major reforms across #connections, #regulation and #planningpolicy. We're pleased to be working so closely with Government, Ofgem and National Grid ESO to design and implement deliverable solutions to bring our clean energy future to life. 🙌 Thanks to Energy UK for hosting such a thought-provoking discussion, and to all who made this event a great success! 👏
