Angela Gram: Here There be Monsters https://lnkd.in/dttcsztM Psy-fi painter Angela Gram makes surreal, nature-inspired imagery, blending psychedelic aesthetics with themes of mysticism and the fading connection to the natural world. Among the psy-fi painters emerging as therapeutic documentarians and metaphysicians of the doubts and psychoses afflicting the West, Angela Gram’s weird creatures stand out as testaments to the unreality experienced by two generations who have witnessed too much of life mediated through shining screens, and too little of it through being present in the joyful sensuality of real experience. In Gram’s imagery, nature is alien, animals intimidating, and reality uncertain. She is a documentarian of malaise, an “unnaturalist” outside the bounds of the digital. She is a shaman of the unknown and the inhuman.

Using visual elements to communicate without semantic meaning, asemic writing pushes the boundaries of expression and human connection by transcending traditional language. Asemic writing is closer to art than to writing. The word “asemic” comes from the same root as the word “semantic”, i.e., that which is a-semic has no semantic meaning. Artists who engage in asemic writing attempt to create forms that look like letters, pictographs, or other meaning-marks without themselves carrying any significance. The results can look at first glance like anything, from a foreign script to an alien crop circle to a geometric diagram to an illegible set of scribbled notes. From Darkness to Creation: Out of the Void https://lnkd.in/gdarPw3v The intersection of art and philosophy in the 20th century, focusing on how artists like Kazimir Malevich responded to the void left by war and the death of religious belief. The industrialized wars of the 20th century horrified the survivors, who were staggered by the scale of the losses – twenty million died in the First World War, and fifty-six million in the Second. The inconceivable slaughter was accompanied by an existential crisis in religious belief – in the face of such a catastrophe, surely God had abandoned humanity. Friedrich Nietzsche’s comments seemed to match the time, as the death of deity left a god-shaped hole in the universe. Artists responded accordingly. #arthistory

Blending art and mechanics, Thomas Kuntz is known for his eerie and surreal, otherworldly and haunting automata sculptures. To Kuntz, automata are full of transformative potential. His living sculptures are deeply related to 18th and 19th-century automata made by talented men who were able to master the complex skills of watchmaking, sculpture, and fine engineering. Divination through Art: Johnny Depp’s Tarot https://lnkd.in/dspwuZWA Johnny Depp's latest series delves into the world of tarot cards, exploring themes of fate and destiny through surrealism and symbolism. Depp’s Tarot reads as a genuinely personal series. One can feel the humility, the undercurrent of absolute love and devotion that runs throughout the cards like an invisible thread. In a world of modern art that is so often so shallow in its execution, so often devoid of depth and passion, Depp has drawn from poignant past experience, and subsequently created a series that is indisputably applaudable for the heart that it lays bare.

Hannah Yata: The Beauty and the Terror https://lnkd.in/dEv-vGds Through her own visual language, Hannah Yata explores the interconnectedness of all living things in her surreal, fantastical paintings. Hannah Yata is one of the most interesting of the American psy-fi painters whose refreshing work fills one of the most dynamic bubbles of the art of our era. Her brilliant figures, her flora, and fauna, are filled with the excitement and pleasure of inspired art and record the liberation of a lively mind freed from the restraint and regulation of religious dogma. Yata’s images are spectacular displays of virtuoso painting, filled with vibrant and relevant decoration and strongly grounded in convincing observation of reality. She imagines sensual feminine figures, tattooed, painted and ornamented, transformed by tribal masks in the wrap and wreath of sinuous plants and tumbled creatures.
