Moral Imaginations

Starting tomorrow, the 24th International #Eurotas Conference is taking place in Oxford, UK. It is offered as an “incubator of new possibilities, a gathering to showcase what is new and vibrant—in research, in ways of practice, and in performance.” The theme of imagination comes back throughout the programme with workshops on ‘Active Imagination and Intuitive Art as a Bridge to Self-Discovery’ and ‘Embodied Imagination for Social Transformation’, a keynote lecture on ‘A World of Possibility: Imagination for Personal and Social Change’… and of course our contributions as Moral Imaginations! On Thursday afternoon, we will host a workshop on Moral Imagination Activism, inviting participants to exercise their imagination muscle, daring them to consider the impossible, and generating visions of the future that centre the welfare of future generations and the more-than-human world. Following the keynote lecture on Friday afternoon, Phoebe Tickell from our team will join Jessica Bockler, PhD, Serge Beddington-Behrens and Cassandra Vieten to discuss Transpersonal Activism and Social Change in our contemporary context of uncertainty and transition. We have a packed schedule of events this autumn bringing moral imagination to the world… ⛰️ Today we are heading to the Austrian Alps for a special few days at the European Forum Alpbach 2024! Our founder and CEO Phoebe Tickell will be speaking at various events over the next few days, addressing the importance of imagination for social change, leadership and activism. She will also take the audience through a Moral Imaginations exercise guided journey as a final intervention at the #Alpbach church. 💭 Tomorrow morning, she will join a panel with Wakanyi Hoffman, Senior Research Fellow at THE NEW INSTITUTE, and Luisa Neubauer, climate justice activist and author at #fridaysforfuture, moderated by Ilana Wetzler. The panel will address the importance and role of imagination in opening new possibilities and not just reacting to the problems of today. 🥪 At lunchtime, she will be joining the ‘Brown Bag Lunch’ to be interviewed on corporate culture and climate action. Morality combined with imagination and creativity can be a powerful force to address the root causes of global issues, and move us towards solutions, together. Moral Imaginations is an approach that emphasizes a deep connection to truth and integrity to ensure the wellbeing of future generations and more-than-human life. We had a brilliant workshop at UWC Atlantic College last week, hosted in the beautiful 12th century St Donat’s castle in Southern Wales. 🔮 We started with one of our key exercises, the portal of imagination, inviting the young participants to feel into the future they dream of. 💡 We presented the different paradigms and stories we work with, and the youth then wrote down what they associate with them (Business as Usual, The Great Turning and the Great Unraveling). 🤼🏽♀️ For the final activity, they were invited to pair up, and engage their creativity to embody the mindset shifts that are an essential part of Moral Imaginations. 💭 Some of the closing words they shared: “inspired, interested, hope, creativity, possibility, future”. It was such a joy working with engaged and reflective young people. Last week, our founder Phoebe Tickell introduced Moral Imaginations to the 2024 cohort of GESA - the Global Environments Summer Academy. People tuned in from Morocco, Wales, Palestine, Tunisia, USA, India, Cameroon, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Uganda, Nigeria, Hawaii, Algeria. She started by crowdsourcing the future held collectively by the group, asking them “What is the vision of the world that you yearn for?”. She then took them through a guided visualisation, imagining a future in symbiosis with nature and the planet, and a way of being human where all life thrives. 👉 Swipe to see some of their answers! One question from a participant really struck our founder: they asked ‘what is the line between imagination and being delusional?’. This opened up a discussion about what it really means to be delusional, it means to lie to oneself or hold false beliefs or judgements about external reality. Phoebe shared that saying that someone is delusional about the future has an element of epistemic hubris about it. We don’t know what is going to happen, and the possible often seemed impossible before it was done. The group explored where it is in their work that imagining different possibilities feels easy, and where it feels hard, and in some cases impossible. Phoebe also talked about being practical visionaries and translating vision into action. GESA is a three-months immersive fellowship for changemakers around the world exploring planetary solutions and fostering resilience. This year, the program focuses on the interlinked themes of peace building, personal resilience, nature connection, conservation, environmental leadership. We have been invited to host a session for the Global Leadership Experience at UWC Atlantic College. This transformative journey brings together 50 passionate and aspirational young individuals ages 15-17 from diverse backgrounds and countries. The youth are taught to develop the 21st century leadership needed at a global, local and personal level, empowering them to strive towards a more just, peaceful and sustainable future. This experience aims to foster inner growth for outer change, cultivating trust, collaboration and empathy skills with creative workshops that explore critical thinking, identity awareness and perspective-taking among participants… a great fit for our work with Moral Imaginations! In our session, we will introduce the participants to the core concepts of Moral Imaginations, including the shift from an industrial growth society to a life-centric society and the 10 Moral Imagination mindset shifts.
