To mark World Mental Health Day 2024, our fantastic Wellbeing Committee have arranged fresh fruit and smoothies across all of our offices. Though mental health and wellbeing is a continuing discourse, World Mental Health Day is an opportune time to remember how important that discourse is. Wellbeing is an integral, though often neglected, aspect of our daily and working lives. It is so important to be able to look after our wellbeing whilst we deliver a service to our clients. If we are unable to be our best selves, then we are unable to perform at our best. A workplace that prioritises the wellbeing of its employees directly translates to happy clients. Moore Barlow sponsored a trainer from Southampton Sight, an inspiring local charity that supports people living with sight loss, to deliver a training programme for Sight Loss Nurse Advisors in collaboration with the local hospital and local authority. This training is delivered by visually impaired members of the charity and seeks to provide patients and their families with much needed practical and emotional support. Maya Sushila, Kieran Thomas and Brenda King from the Medical Negligence team were invited to take part in a ‘blind baking’ experience with Southampton Sight to get a real feeling of the limitations and difficulties faced by people living with sight loss. For World Sight Day, Maya Sushila and the Medical negligence team reflects on the devastating consequences of avoidable sight loss, and how legal action can improve safety for patients on a national level. We hope that by increasing awareness, more patients will understand how bringing a claim can help prevent others from experiencing similar avoidable injuries. This day serves as a reminder of the need for regular eye examinations, early detection and treatment of eye conditions, and access to eye care for all. Dr. Bob Clarke, an archaeologist diagnosed with diabetes in 2003, developed diabetic retinopathy in 2006 and later, diabetic macular ischemia in 2017. Despite ongoing management, a lack of coordination from the Defendant resulted in Bob showing early signs of neovascular glaucoma by 2019, which went unrecognized. In just three months, he went from being fully independent to being registered as severely visually impaired.
