Last year we did a series in which we asked music advocates from all over the world to share 4 books to better understand music cities topics. Here is Robert Gaa's recommendations: 1. "Dance Your Way Home – A Journey Through the Dance Floor" by Emma Warren, which explores the function of dance for society and how subcultures have shaped urban spaces. 2. "This Must Be The Place – An Architectural History of Popular Music Performance Venues" by Robert Kronenburg, the first architectural history of popular music performance spaces and their impact on cities' identities. 3. "Ten Cities – Clubbing in Nairobi, Cairo, Kyiv, Johannesburg, Naples, Berlin, Luanda, Lagos, Bristol and Lisbon 1960 – March 2020", edited by @Johannes Hossfeld Etyan, Joyce Nyairo, Ph. D, and Florian Sievers, which provides a narrative of international club music and club cultures. 4. "Night Fever – Design und Clubkultur 196-heute", a beautifully designed book published by Vitra Design Museum, exploring the intersections of design and club culture over the decades. These books offer a deep dive into how club culture shapes cities and the various factors that influence their development, making them essential reading for anyone interested in the night-time economy advocacy.
