What's the worst that could happen? A smile, a laugh, an unforgettable moment. Give it a try. Seriously, go for it. Maybe it'll work. Maybe it won't. But either way, someone's going to smile. Maybe you, maybe someone watching. They might laugh with you or—let's be real—at you. And that's the magic of it. Even when you're already happy, why not add more fun to the mix? I'm often in a great mood, and it takes a lot to make me angry. So, find the joy in trying something new. Picture this: Me. In my backyard. A big smile on my face. Doing this ridiculous exercise. I was cry-laughing and couldn't wait to ask my neighbors if they saw me. Go ahead, try it. It worked for me! And what's the worst that could happen? A smile? A laugh? A story to tell? Sounds like a win to me. 🔄 Share this with our friends to spread more joy. 🎥 video credit: @taichi.kexiao on Instagram

Grow and learn with me: personal development, leadership, innovation. I am a project leader, coach, and visual creator, and I share all I learn through my posts and newsletter.

One must-read for this week: "Information-Action Gap" by Sahil Bloom. “If information isn't nurtured with action, it loses its power”. He argues that action can be many things, from plainly rejecting the advice as unhelpful to following up, teaching others, or adapting existing routines and processes. One of my favorite ways to reduce the information-action gap is to send a follow-up thank you message every time someone gives me advice and immediately set up the following action and follow-up. The source and more in this week's newsletter edition in the first comment 👇 Illustration by me 😊

    • The image is a two-part illustration conveying the concept of growth through action. The top half shows a simple terracotta pot with soil inside, labeled "Information," indicating that information alone is like an unplanted seed. The bottom half adds more detail: on the left, a yellow watering can pours water into a similar pot with the words "With Action" above it. To the right, two additional pots illustrate growth stages—from a small seedling to a mature tree with lush green leaves, symbolizing how taking action on information leads to significant growth.

Practical Tips for Developing Your Emotional Competence Effective Self-Leadership requires you to be aware when your emotions are negatively impacting how you perceive situations, make decisions, solve problems, and collaborate with others. The goal is to develop your ability to effectively manage your emotions so that they inform you but don’t define you. The 4 Visuals in this post provide practical tips for developing your emotional competence.   1) Learn To Pause Pausing when you are feeling negative emotions allows you to regain your balance and perspective before choosing your best actions that align with your values and goals. Pausing allows you to catch up with your negative emotions before you react. 2) Breathe To Calm Emotions We have an intuitive understanding that our breath can calm our mind and emotions. Most of us have either told others or been told ourselves to "take a deep breath” when encountering difficult situations. Since our breathing happens automatically, many of us don’t give the breath as much attention as it deserves and have not learned to harness its full potential to calm our minds and emotions. 3) Name It To Tame It The simple act of naming your emotion helps your brain move it from the areas of your brain that are equipped to address physical threat to the more rational parts that serve you in problem solving, relationships, and creativity. As neuroscientists like to say, naming an emotion helps you tame it. The more specific we are in naming our emotions the more prepared we will be to take the right steps forward. If you are experiencing a strong emotion, take a moment to label it. But do not stop there: once you have identified it, try to come up with two more words that describe how you are feeling. This exercise helps you uncover the deeper emotion beyond the more obvious one. 4) What Can You Control? Stephen Covey’s Circle of Influence provides a practical framework for when we need to challenge feelings of helplessness by identifying attitudes and activities within our control or influence. The point is to create awareness by defining the worries to let go of because they are beyond our influence while at the same time identifying the areas where our efforts will have a real impact. The most successful among us – know that it is not the adversity itself but what we do with it that determines our fate.    What are other ways you have developed your emotional competence? How do I stop overthinking? Today, Zahara asks: — “Why can’t I just stop overthinking and enjoy the moment?” — Welcome to Episode 145 of AskMatty! Here’s my answer, Zahara: — I wanna share a tool that changed my life — really! It’s called “Radical Acceptance”. Which means: 1.    You accept the current situation 2.    You move forward with a clearer mindset You have no idea how liberating this is. It literally changed my life. Let me tell you the 3 reasons why I use it. And how I use it. 1.     Radical acceptance keeps my energy up throughout the day Why? Because it reduces mental tug-of-war. Overthinking is all about battling with thoughts that can’t be changed. Radical acceptance helps us see them without getting stuck. In short, it eases mental struggles. 2.    Radical acceptance cuts down on unnecessary worries. Why? Because you accept that some situations are beyond your control. It’s like giving ourselves permission to stop worrying. We simply accept that some things can’t be controlled. So it becomes easier to move on. 3.    Radical acceptance makes me kinder to myself. Why? Because it helps us see overthinking as part of the experience. It’s not something strange or awkward. It’s just part of the process. So we become more compassionate toward ourselves. And you know the power of self-compassion, right? →    It reduces the cycle of negative self-judgment The same judgment that often comes with overthinking. Now the question is: →    How do I use this magical Radical Acceptance? Well, the answer is: →    I just use it — I accept things for what they are There’s no secret formula here. Just be fully convinced. →    “Um, convinced of what, Matty?” Convinced that what’s happening is part of a bigger plan. It’s part of the bigger gift we’ve received — life. I personally see events as part of the equation of life. Both good events and bad ones. You don’t complain about seeing road signs on the street, right? They’re just part of the system. You don’t complain about seeing gray clouds in the sky, right? They’re just part of nature. At the same time, we don’t wanna complain about things we can’t control. Just accept the current situation — and move forward. — Alright! Thanks for your question, Zahara. Question of the day: →    What makes your day more enjoyable? Let me know in the comments :) “Let’s build a more inclusive world by spreading wellbeing globally!” – Matty
