A massive well done to our early years team 👏 as Middlesbrough has been recognised as one of the country’s leading lights for the number of two-year-olds attending free education. Figures from the Department for Education show Middlesbrough is ranked second out of 128 councils for children of that age taking up their place at nursery or with a childminder. Accessing the 15 hours per week provision plays a huge role in preparing young children for school and contributes to them getting the best start in life. Data on the Achieving 2 Year Olds (AY2O) places shows Middlesbrough is the number one council in the North East and also top rated among authorities judged to have similar levels of deprivation. The impressive statistics contribute to one of the Council’s priorities – for Middlesbrough to be a healthy place.

Positive changes to improve Middlesbrough Council have been recognised by government after it was confirmed a ‘Best Value Notice’ would not be re-issued.   The notice was originally issued in January 2023 due to concerns from ministers about the way the Council was operating, and was reissued for six months in January this year.   The announcement comes as the Department for Education confirmed another positive step forward, as it withdrew its involvement in the Council’s Children’s Services.   Mayor Chris Cooke, elected in May last year, said the announcement was "resounding recognition of the hard work that the Council has done to solve problems from the past".   He continued: “This is positive news but our hard work is only just beginning. I'm determined that we will recover, reset and deliver for the people of Middlesbrough."   Clive Heaphy, who joined the Council as interim chief executive in March 2023, said the withdrawal of the notice was “very encouraging”.   “This is a positive reflection of the genuine progress that staff, councillors and the Mayor have made together,” he said.   “I’m really pleased for our staff, who’ve had to work under the shadow of these serious government directions. We can be confident that Middlesbrough Council is moving in the right direction, but must be mindful that there is still more work to do."

🛠 Workers are on site to deliver Middlesbrough's new STACK Leisure destination. The STACK is being built beneath the A66 flyover as it meets Exchange Square, close to Middlesbrough Railway Station. The pop-up container village is aiming to open before Christmas and will use 25 shipping containers to feature six street food vendors, three bars and a stage for live music. 🌯 And the team has now put out a call for top street food vendors to get in touch to feature fantastic local cuisine at the venue. Other STACKs across the UK offer everything from artisan pizzas and bao buns to handcrafted burgers, mac and cheese, authentic Indian food and Greek specialties. STACK’s own food brands Holy Duck and pizza emporium ZZA will be featured, and the company is now looking for a high end, eclectic mix of North East street food providers of other cuisines, which will fit within STACK’s signature brand.
