Mettle Capital closes its first external fund raise! We (Rufus Grantham & Andrew Tucker, Ph.D.) founded Mettle to build a dataset that would drive improved decision making and capital allocation relating to ESG; a for profit company, but with a mission. The goal was to employ machine reading and a big data approach to create a proprietary, granular, and dynamic Open Source Intelligence dataset that would shed light on which issues, away from standard financial performance metrics, were material for individual companies and how they were perceived by key stakeholders. The idea was that the data would be valuable to organisations advising, dealing with, and investing in companies to make more informed decisions. Over almost 5 years we have built a dataset that has predictive capability to share price and we have done so self-funded and bootstrapped by alpha and beta clients. We have created 4 distinct products and now have the opportunity to accelerate the commercialisation of our #ESRS #DoubleMaterialityAssessment solution in particular. A fair amount of unqualified noise has surrounded #Paris2024 Olympics as "the most sustainable ever". As Mettle Capital always says... context is essential, both absolute and relative. 🥉 In absolute terms, #Paris2024 is edging towards the previous peaks before the 2022 Beijing Winter Games and 2020 Tokyo Summer Games although that is only just about net positive in terms of sentiment. 🥈 In relative terms, the Olympics trails the #NBA (basketball), is on par with #EUFA (European football), and outperforms #FIFA (world football). 🥇 So the answer is... the #Olympics is perceived as just about positive on sustainability but no more than previous games. Great use case of Mettle Capital data to interrogate the ESG narrative in the insurance sector. When combined with primary research amongst 250 UK commercial lines insurance brokers by Broking Now! Julian Green from FWD Consulting is able to draw firm conclusions: "Effectively managing Social aspects along with Business Ethics and regulatory adherence are key as insurers navigate the ESG landscape”.

Given the choice, would you invest your pension sustainably? Anecdotally, people under 40 years old and/or with children overwhelmingly agree. But what does this preference actually mean? how could a pension fund discern these preferences? what should asset managers do to meet this demand? To answer these questions, Mettle Capital, Wyser and Brunel University London, supported by Innovate UK and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, have launched the 'Revealing pension members' sustainability preferences using conversational AI' project in May 2024. The goal is to tilt UK pension pots towards more sustainable investments and so meet the UK's 2050 #NetZero target.
