Coming on 16th September... Zaha Hadid's Paintings: Imagining Architecture by Desley Luscombe! The book examines Hadid's paintings in detail, both critically assessing them in the wider context of 20th-century fine art – in relation to the Suprematists, de Stijl, Cubism and Futurism – and offering insights into how Hadid used the paintings to develop architectural and spatial ideas, which she would later realise in her buildings. The paintings were created at a pivotal time in architecture, just before the move away from hand drawing to computers and many of Hadid’s paintings pre-empt the potential of digital and virtual reality. Pre-order now from www.lundhumphries.com #ZahaHadid #zahahadidarchitecture #ZahaHadidPaintings #Sprematists #deStijl #Cubism #Futurism

Officially released today... 'Helen Clapcott: In the Light of Buildings', written by Andrew Lambirth! Clapcott is a painter pre-occupied with the destruction and regeneration of the landscape of her native North-West England. Depictions of the mutation and evolution of what was once Stockport’s industrial valley, now a commuter corridor, are expressions of our developing environments and the growth of vernacular townscapes. Based on numerous conversations with the artist, and an in-depth understanding of Clapcott's oeuvre, Andrew Lambirth's text provides a lively account of the artist's background, training and working methods, including her mastery of tempera. Above all, this is a study of an artist's very personal relationship with the evolving landscape of her childhood and her lifelong artistic engagement with the city that she loves. The book is available ahead of the much-anticipated solo show of Helen Clapcott's work in ‘A Portrait of Stockport’ opening at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery on 28th September!! Find out more about the exhibition on the Stockport Council website. The main sponsor of ‘A Portrait of Stockport’ is local business and leading North West law firm, SAS Daniels. The exhibition will feature a 20 minute video on Helen and her work made by Tony Halton Films. And the monograph ‘Helen Clapcott: In the Light of Buildings’ will be available to purchase at the gallery. #StockportinArt #NorthernArt #HelenClapcott #BritishArt #IndustrialLandscape #Industryinart

Author, Journalist and Art Industry Expert

Thank you to ArtTactic and Margaret Hong for this review of our book 'Art in Saudi Arabia: A New Creative Economy?' Alia Al-Senussi "Catchy title, catchier representation; Art in Saudi Arabia by seasoned reporter Rebecca Anne Proctor, with Alia Al-Senussi, offers an opportune overview of the past, present and future of the Kingdom’s contemporary cultural scene and economy; in particular within the ubiquitous Vision 2030, the trillion-dollar mega project led by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). The words ‘contemporary’ and ‘economy’ are key here. What is being exchanged in the creative economy and whose work gets into the canon to tell the story of who? To demystify the infrastructural spectacles and provide readers the ability to make their own judgement, the authors interviewed various industry players, from artists to gallery owners to academics to curators and the like, to shed light on their hopes and worries in art-making and appreciation at home and abroad, amidst Saudi’s leapfrogging political, religious and social reformations since 2016.   In the face of self-censorship, morality of public and private institutions and the financialisation of art, all of which are especially pertinent in the cultural practices in the Global North nowadays, the authors try to make a balanced statement that seeing art in Saudi Arabia through the Western lens may not necessarily paint the full picture of what’s happening within the Kingdom. However, if we take a closer look at the discussion of this cultural opening, there exists a diplomatic undertone that the current art patronage is just the beginning of something that never existed before – a platform for artistic expressions – the development of which is yet to come to a conclusion (like what will happen after 2030?). As the authors note, they only “seek to demonstrate” how public investment in the arts brought visibility and profitability to a previously “unthinkable” industry in Saudi Arabia. There is no definitive answer here to whether creativity is merely a means to an end (diversifying fiscal revenue from oil and promoting the region at large on the global stage) or a recognition of individual talents and collective voice. They leave that up to time and readers’ own point of views to ascertain."   Lund Humphries https://lnkd.in/dGNkGyQg

The penultimate project in our 20th birthday album! And it's a quiet, restorative one as it’s the summer holidays – the Dyson family's house and studio in the Suffolk countryside. Like many of the studio’s projects, there are familiar themes. A Grade II-listed property. A contemporary extension. A little Corten, beautifully detailed joinery, brickwork (the barrel vault in the kitchen) and concrete worktops by Leigh Cameron. Then a few playful flourishes, like the gold studio bathroom, loft bed, painted ceilings by Ian Harper and shepherd’s hut in the garden. Grace McCloud interviewed Chris Dyson about this rural escape on the release of the Lund Humphries monograph, Heritage & Modernity for Inigo's Almanac last year: “When the original house was constructed in 1650, it was done so in reclaimed oak from old beams, wattle and daub, and thatch – as such, it’s a reflection of a moment in history. And I think we should all be building for the moment, in a way that performs to the standards of our age in an aesthetic and functional way... All architecture is a reflection of a time and place in the universe.” Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/ePnhMzek #ChrisDysonArchitects20x20 Photos: Peter Landers #chrisdysonarchitects #renovation #restoration

𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸, 𝘙𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭, by curator and writer Fatoş Üstek, is a unique manifesto for raising the standard of institutional practices of art organisations across the world. To celebrate the book’s launch, de Appel will be hosting a presentation of the book by Üstek followed by a roundtable with de Appel team members around some of the key areas of necessitated transformation outlined in the book. Fatoş Üstek argues that there is a “world of crises” at different scales, and that the current systems of art institutions have difficulty meeting this world's demands. With this new book, she proposes a new institutional model. Built on an extensive study of non-profit visual arts organisations and the creative industries at large and incorporating interviews with more than 50 international institutional leaders from throughout the sector, the book proposes an outline of change that art institutions will need to undergo in order to maintain their relevance for generations to come. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸 is published as part of 𝘏𝘰𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 series by Lund Humphries, in association with Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Join us for the launch at de Appel on Wednesday 4 September at 7:30pm. Please note that by reserving a seat you will help team members prepare ahead of time: https://lnkd.in/evs4-7ur
