There’s a buzz around Waltham Forest. Bursting with culture, energy and opportunity, it’s a place people want to live, raise a family and start a business. We were the first ever London Borough of Culture, named MJ's Local Authority of the year in 2019 and have a rich cultural heritage that takes in William Morris and Alfred Hitchcock and a host of new creative talent. We’re at the forefront of regeneration in London and we’re working hard to make a big difference to our residents’ lives. We’re proud to be one of the most diverse areas in the country, with a vibrant and strong sense of community. • “It gives residents a sense of independence, a better quality of life and improves their mental health and wellbeing.” For World Occupational Therapy Day, we spoke to two of our Social Care team about the profession, why they love coming to work each day and what difference can be made to a resident's life if they need support. An Occupational Therapist focuses on maximising a person's independence, gives advice, suggests support equipment, and can recommend major adaptations to a resident's home. Shirley and Mollie are Social Care Assistants doing their Occupational Therapy Degree Apprenticeships. Watch the video to hear what they had to say. • As part of our mission to make Waltham Forest a place to live and age well, we've been highlighting the ease and importance of bowel cancer screening. As the third most common cancer, it's vital that people use the screening kit when they receive it, as treatment is most effective when cancer is detected early. For Phil from Chingford, screening and early detection are crucial and saved his life when he had cancer 16 years ago. What to know about the at-home screening kit: 👉 You'll receive a kit when you turn 50, then every two years until you're 74 👉 As long as you're registered with a GP, it'll automatically be sent out to your home address 👉 The kit is quick, easy to use and done in the comfort of your own home 👉 Once the kit is posted back, you'll get results back within two weeks Learn more about bowel cancer screening on our website: https://orlo.uk/EiJlF
