Local councils are sounding the alarm on the housing crisis 🚨 Tenant’s union Housing Action Teesside are calling for large-scale council housing to address rising homelessness. 📈Since July 2023, rents in Stockton have risen by 7.9%, contributing to an 83% rise in homelessness. Many households remain stuck in damp, mouldy and unfit-for-purpose temporary accommodation while waiting for council housing. Housing Action suggests building more council housing could help relieve waiting lists and provide a fairer alternative to private renting. 🏚️But what if vacant homes could be part of the solution? From Vacant to Vital: How Empty Retail Spaces Could House the Homeless KTGY Architecture’s ‘Re-Habit’ concept imagines turning empty retail stores into thriving spaces for the homeless. 35% of the U.S homeless population remains unsheltered (WhiteHouse.gov) This solution offers not just shelter, but job training, community gardens, and vital support services - all under one roof. The design includes flexible sleeping arrangements; from 20-bed pods to private 2 bed units, giving residents a path to independence whilst fostering a sense of community.
