LMRUK invests in specialist research into stem cell therapies to treat blood cancer as well as raising public awareness of the benefits of such therapies in the treatment of blood cancers. The charity also offers a fully-funded and part-funded stem cell storage service for qualifying families, called the Model Cell Biobank. The Model Cell Biobank is the UK’s first umbilical cord blood stem cell storage service which offers expectant parents the opportunity to safely store their baby’s cord blood stem cells at no harm or risk to mother or baby, for future treatment for the baby or an immediate family member. Cord blood stem cells are currently being used to treat and cure more than 80 life-threatening illnesses, including many cancers, immune deficiencies and genetic disorders. LMRUK is a proud member of The Institute of Fundraising, a professional membership body of UK fundraising.

Huge congratulations to Lee Walkingshaw and his friend Stephen MacDonald for completing the epic Loch Ness 24 Challenge! 🎉 Participants are challenged with running, or walking, the 7km loop around Loch Ness as many times as possible in 24 hours. Lee and Stephen completed an incredible 168km between the two of them, all while raising funds for our charity. Lee said: “The event was a success, very hard going, but very much worth it. We’re absolutely chuffed with our achievement and for raising over £1,600 for LMRUK.” We’re wishing Lee and a group of his friends lots of luck as they now prepare to take part in The Kiltwalk, a 21-mile walk around the city of Edinburgh this September. #Fundraising #BloodCancer #LochNess24 #KiltWalk #CharityFundraising

Great story of success facilitated by funding from LMRUK. I'm privileged to be working alongside the Research Review Committee. LMRUK are still looking for expressions of interest for a clinical haematologist to join this committee. Please reach out if you or someone in your network could help!
Our research grant has been a catalyst for further vital cancer support 🔬 Dr Ricardo A. Fernandes and his team at the University of Oxford’s Department of Medicine were awarded our annual research grant in 2022, with the funding used to investigate shutting down a malfunctioning protein linked with a high number of blood cancer cases. Two years on and Dr Fernandes has revealed that as a result of that initial work, further support has been forthcoming through funding for a five-year Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship to a Postdoctoral Researcher. Dr Fernandes said: “That initial piece of work, which we managed to do with support from LMRUK gave us the initial data to guide the design of novel molecules that attempt to reduce aberrant FLT3 signals and to put forward the application for a Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship, which are highly prestigious and very difficult to get.” To find out more about Dr Fernandes’ work, click here: https://lnkd.in/eSRe8xPC We’ll soon be announcing the successful applicants of our 2024 grant scheme to support further blood cancer research. #BloodCancer #ResearchGrant #BloodCancerResearch #ResearchFunding

One of the UK’s leading researchers into Myeloma has received a rarely awarded degree from the University of Leeds. Gordon Cook, a Professor of Haematology, is the ninth person to be awarded the Higher Doctorate by the university since 2008. Professor Cook has pioneered national clinical trials into treatments for Myeloma, specifically aimed at patients who relapsed following a stem cell transplant and the potential benefits of a second transplant. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e89RUJHe. At LMRUK, we raise awareness and fund vital research into how stem cells can be used in the treatment of blood cancer as well as the advantages of procuring and banking umbilical cord blood stem cells. Are you a Clinical Haematologist? We’re seeking Clinical Haematologists to join our Research Review Committee (RRC). In joining our RRC, you will meet annually (virtually) to review research grant applications and use your knowledge and expertise to provide recommendations for funding them. Our Committee is made up of a team of specialist clinicians and researchers in the field of blood cancer and stem cell therapies. For more information about our Research Review Committee and how to apply, visit: https://lnkd.in/dVSwRYe. #ClinicalHaematologist #Research #BloodCancer #ResearchCommittee
A HUGE congratulations to Rachel who successfully ran the Tatton 10k raising £2,260 for our charity! Rachel said: “I did it! I finished the 10k in just over an hour so I’m feeling incredibly proud of myself. To have raised over £2,000 for LMRUK to support blood cancer research is the icing on the cake.” She was inspired to run the Tatton 10k after her mum Jane was diagnosed with Myeloma. After gruelling courses of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, Jane is now making good progress. Well done, Rachel 👏 Your support will help us to continue raising awareness of the different types of blood cancer and investing in vital new research. Rachel Handley from Worsley in Salford is getting ready to run the Tatton 10k at the end of this month, after her mum, Jane, was diagnosed with Myeloma shortly after Christmas in 2022. Jane underwent gruelling courses of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, and she is now making good progress with regular medication and monthly check-ups. Rachel is fundraising for our charity, after coming across the work we do while researching Myeloma. The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) has published its annual report examining the impact of medical research charities across the UK. The report found that £1.7 billion was spent by AMRC members on medical research in the UK for the financial year ending in 2023, and over £16 billion has been invested over the last ten years. Our Operations Director, Dr Joanna Tilley said: “We’re proud to be a member of the AMRC and to join over 150 charities across the country to continue investing in potentially lifesaving research. “Last year, over 1,300 clinical research studies or trials were funded by AMRC members, which is a reflection of the vital role research charities play in helping to understand and cure diseases and illnesses.” To read the AMRC’s full ‘Our Sector’s Footprint’ report, visit: https://lnkd.in/g3cYB2vU #CharityImpact #UKResearch #MedicalResearch
