We’re thrilled to announce that our charity has been awarded £8,800 of National Lottery funding to support our work educating people on the common signs and symptoms of blood cancer to help encourage earlier diagnosis. The generous funding has supported the production, printing and distribution of our informative blood cancer guides and leaflets. Dr Joanna Tilley, our Operations Director said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised the importance of our work and provided vital funding for us to continue educating people on blood cancer. “We want to provide patients and their families with clear information that would answer their questions, explain the terminology, and highlight the various treatments to provide reassurance and help them feel empowered to make informed choices. “Thanks to the generosity of the National Lottery players, we can continue to fight blood cancer and help to protect the next generation from this disease.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eT2rvzm8. #BloodCancer #BloodCancerEducation #CharityGrant #NationalLotteryFunding

A blood cancer diagnosis, no matter when you receive it, is always a scary turn of events. However, early diagnosis can increase the chances of successful treatment, so being aware of the early signs and symptoms can be vital - a message echoed by Jayne Handley and Richard Woods. When Jayne was diagnosed with Myeloma and Richard with Leukaemia in 2022, they were both able to identify earlier symptoms which could have been warning signs of blood cancer. Both Jayne and Richard kindly shared their stories with us, and you can read more about their journeys on our website. To mark World Cancer Research Day today, we're pleased to share that we've awarded £63,000 in grant funding to support two vital blood cancer research projects. 🩸Assistant Professor Sophie Kellaway at the University of Nottingham will be undertaking specialist research into the re-growth of cells that cause the cancer, and whether they can be neutralised with the use of two drugs already available to treat other conditions to help prevent the return of blood cancers. 🩸Professor Cristina Lo Celso and her PhD student Dr Germaine Chia of Imperial College London will be conducting a two-year project that aims to improve the efficiency of treatment for blood cancers and reduce its toxicity. Head over to our website to read more about Dr Kellaway's research: https://lnkd.in/e5j7PVRi. A new academic research study into decoding the genetics of Myeloma will begin in January 2025, thanks to the fundraising of Peter McCleave who raised the £50,000 needed to fund the project. Peter was diagnosed with Myeloma in 2017, and after being told he has seven years to live, he has been dedicated to raising awareness of this form of blood cancer and vital money to advance new research. He is also an active campaigner encouraging people to join the national stem cell register to help patients in need of a donor, which he himself is still hoping for. The research will be conducted at Newcastle University, where Peter graduated. Scientists at Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) in Melbourne have successfully grown blood stem cells in a laboratory for the first time in history 🔬 This significant breakthrough opens the door for Leukaemia patients to be treated using blood cells grown from their own skin and hair, negating the need for transplants. Additionally, the team at MCRI have proven that the lab-grown stem cells can be frozen before a successful transplant, meaning they can be stored until needed by the patient.
