Legal Voices for the Future
Legal Services
We are a collaborative learning forum of lawyers who organise monthly knowledge sessions on pressing global issues.
About us
Legal Voices for the Future is a collaborative learning forum established by junior practitioners from different fields of law, whose objective is to give voice to a new generation of lawyers. It proposes to do so by holding monthly knowledge sessions open to everyone - lawyers and non-lawyers alike. In order to bring fresh perspective, innovation and determination to pressing global issues such as climate change, each session is organised and led by a different member of Legal Voices for the Future. Legal Voices for the Future is an inclusive and safe space offering the opportunity for collaboration and collective learning without professing expertise. Anyone can join our open forum knowledge sessions to informally and creatively share knowledge. We wish to empower members of Legal Voices for the Future to use the law as a force for positive change and facilitate the forging of connections for collaboration on solutions to climate change and other societal injustices. We also recognise the importance of cross-sector collaboration, and encourage our members and friends of Legal Voices for the Future to engage in discussions and develop valuable relationships beyond law.

🌍❓COP16, the sixteenth UN conference on Biodiversity, wrapped up in Cali, Columbia last week - but what is COP16, and what are the key objectives behind the Convention on Biological Diversity?❓🌍 🐞 COP16 is the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, which entered into force on 29 December 1993. 🐜 The Convention has three main objectives: The conservation of biological diversity The sustainable use of the components of biological diversity The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilisation of genetic resources 🐛 The COP the governing body of the Convention, and is composed of representatives of member states that are parties to it. The COP advances and reviews implementation of the Convention through decisions taken at its periodic (normally bi-annual) meetings. 🐝 COP16 marked the first meeting since the ambitious Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was adopted during COP15 - setting out goals and pathways to halt and reverse global biodiversity loss. 🌼 The Convention has a broad agenda, but discussions at COP16 centred around the use of digital sequencing information on genetic resources, a review of implementation of the GBF (in particular finance and resource mobilisation) and Article 8j of the Convention, being provisions regarding effective involvement of indigenous and local communities in all stages of implementation. 🍄 If you’re interested to hear about domestic efforts to enhance our biological diversity in the UK (which is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world) sign up to our upcoming knowledge session on 🌳 Biodiversity Net Gain and Nature Recovery 🌳 taking place on 3 December. 🌿 To join us for this session, the registration link is in the comments 👇 Photo by Bhabin Tamang on Pexels Ming Zee Tee Sarah Hill-Smith Flora Curtis Yomna Elewa Marina Soares Riley Forson Dominika Leitane Emma Short Harriet Hall Catríona Campbell #ESG #legalvoicesforthefuture #lawyers #BNG #biodiversity #BiodiversityNetGain #nature #SustainabilityInLaw #COP16

🎥 Have you enjoyed one or more of our knowledge sessions, like the one pictured below? ➡️ All our knowledge sessions are run on the volunteer energy of many people - our Stewardship Committee, facilitators, photographers, members, quest interviewees, tech support… and the list goes on and on. We are covered where the main currency is energy 🙏 ➡️ The fundraiser would help us with catering (snacks and drinks) for our events, where such catering is not provided by the venue, as well as with securing a paid venue in case we cannot find a pro bono one. ➡️ Any funds raised help us with running costs for our website, which keeps all our materials accessible in one place - and in the long run will help us to update and improve our website. By helping us you junior young lawyers gain easy access to high-quality peer-to-peer education on important ecological and societal issues entirely for free - a cause many no doubt support! 🙏 Every donation is much appreciated 🙏 #climatechange #legalvoicesforthefuture #lawyers #juniorlawyers Ming Zee Tee Sarah Hill-Smith Flora Curtis Yomna Elewa Marina Soares Riley Forson Dominika Leitane Emma Short Harriet Hall Catríona Campbell

Legal Voices for the Future reposted this
On Tuesday, Legal Voices for the Future convened a knowledge session on competition law and sustainability. Hosted by Andreas Wildner, Neha Harish and Leonor Vulpe Albari, this session provided an introduction to sustainability agreements in the UK and the US, as well as invaluable insights from industry experts Sandrine Delarue (Competition and Markets Authority) and Maurits Dolmans (Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP). For easy-to-use guidance on how to navigate EU and UK competition law in the context of sustainability and climate agreements, have a look at our “UK/EU Competition 101”. This NZLA resource: 👉 highlights the balance between antitrust regulation and fostering competitor collaboration on environmental initiatives 👉 provides tools to help you determine whether an agreement does (or does not) comply with competition law 👉 identifies where you can find further information. We also encourage you to check out Legal Voices for the Future – an exciting and inspiring learning forum that gives voice to a new generation of lawyers on the most pressing global issues: the climate and ecological crises.
