Chief Executive at Leeds City Council

Some personal news to answer my most frequently asked question this year….I’ll be starting a new job later this month as second Permanent Secretary in the Department of Health and Social Care. There are few bigger challenges than those facing health and care, and not many bigger opportunities to make a positive difference to people. I’m so grateful for the support of my brilliant colleagues and partners in Leeds. I’ve loved working with you, and I know the council and the city are in safe hands. As I’ll be doing the new job from London and Leeds, it’ll be great to be working in the city, and with the wider local government family, now as a stakeholder. As I venture back to the Civil Service where my career started, I’ll take with me the learning, experience, things that worked and those that didn’t, and join the team in and outside the Department trying to build a better health and care system. I’m really looking forward to it. Wish me luck!

We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for an award, alongside Leeds City Council, at the Insider Yorkshire Property Industry Awards 2024 on Thursday 19 September at New Dock Hall in Leeds. The £1.5 billion Leeds Innovation Arc, which includes Leeds Innovation Village, has been nominated in the Future Ambition Award category, which is for a scheme or development that has passed a significant milestone during the qualifying period. The Leeds Innovation Arc features a series of innovation neighbourhoods, formed around the universities, major private sector occupiers and the Leeds General Infirmary. Set across 150 hectares of the city centre, the Arc will stitch together some of the most significant innovation assets in the north of England. It will be a global destination for people, investment and innovation in one of the UK’s fastest growing and greenest cities with an ecosystem well placed to address the biggest societal challenges of our time with collaborative, diverse and innovative solutions. There will be over 3,000 new homes in and around the Arc and the potential for hundreds of thousands of square metres of public realm improvements, as well as space for two new city parks creating four hectares of new, meaningful green space. Leeds Innovation Village at the Leeds General Infirmary will harness the wealth of expertise and knowledge across the city and create thousands of jobs in health innovation, engineering, financial and business services, data analytics and digital technologies. It will be born out of five hectares of land and existing buildings, unlocked by the building of two new hospitals to develop a world-class hub for research, innovation and technology in health and life sciences. An independent report conducted in 2023 by accountancy firm PWC estimates our development will deliver 4,000 new jobs and up to £13bn economic boost for the region. The award will go to the scheme or development that wins the most attendee votes on the evening of the event so If you are planning to attend, we hope that we can count on your vote to secure victory.

We have joined forces with over 100 local authorities to release a report that aims to focus public and political attention on the importance of council housing and, crucially, the urgent action needed to secure its future 🏠 Co-ordinated by Southwark Council, the report sets out a roadmap for the renewal of England’s council housing over the next decade as well as a series of suggested policy changes to help bring about that transformation. It also details how huge financial pressures have squeezed housing budgets to the point where, for some councils, maintaining or improving existing homes – let alone building new ones – represents a significant challenge. The report recommends five key measures that it says would help local authorities and central government work together to deliver the next generation of council homes. They are: - The creation of a new and sustainable model for the funding of council housing; - The reform of Right to Buy policies, including protecting newly-built council homes from sale; - The removal of red tape to simplify how existing funding can be accessed and used; - A long-term Green & Decent Homes Programme that would bring all council housing up to a new standard of safety, decency and energy efficiency by 2030; - Action to restart and complete stalled building projects. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are over, and what a time it was for #TeamLeeds athletes! 🏅 Whether from the city or based in it, our stars brought home 12 medals, 9 bronze and 3 gold, with winning efforts from Tom Pidcock in the cross-country mountain biking, Katy Marchant in the women’s team sprint cycling and Georgie Brayshaw in the women’s quad sculls rowing. Their medal haul underlined the city's status as a powerhouse of sporting talent, and also provided fitting testament to the dedication of the volunteers who run countless community clubs and teams across the city. We’re now beginning the process of planning for a civic reception later this year to honour all local athletes who took part in the Olympics and upcoming Paralympics, which take place from August 28 to September 8. Keep an eye out for more details coming soon. A massive well done to all the athletes for their incredible achievements.
