Many of our LDA Design #employeeowners love to sketch or paint. So, we’re introducing #SketchFriday – and taking a moment each week to celebrate the talent that runs deep in all of our studios. Here’s a fantastic selection of sketches of #Bristol from Mark Stewart. They include historic King Street, which we have been involved with for some time working closely with the council, local traders and the Bristol Old Vic. Love the perspective that Mark brings to his work, as he captures places and people and #landscapes that are constantly evolving. Enjoy. Great work, Mark.👏 Well done. More #SketchFriday next week. Connecting people and place through landscape
About us
At LDA Design, we make great places and shape the world around us for the better. We do this by connecting people and place through landscape. The origin of the word landscape is to create a place where people belong. We follow the principles of ‘first life, then spaces, then buildings’. Whether we are designing a new district, restoring a park or regenerating an estate, we start with what people want and need. LDA Design led the final landscape masterplan and detailed design for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of Europe’s most successful new parklands. We have designed and delivered some of the UK’s most challenging city centre public realm projects, including London’s Battersea Power Station, Stratford Waterfront and Strand Aldwych. This work includes George Street in Edinburgh and the transformation of public realm in Newcastle City Centre. We have developed a public realm strategy for Liverpool that will shape the centre for the next 25 years. Our award-winning partnership with Camden has transformed West End streets, carving out new green space and creating a healthier, safer, and more pleasant experience for pedestrians and cyclists. The climate crisis is the biggest challenge of our generation. As the UK weans itself off fossil fuels, a substantially increased demand for a reliable and secure mix of low-carbon energy lies ahead. Our long-standing commitment to renewable energy, since its infancy, places us at the forefront to help clients respond to this global challenge. Our experience, together with our creativity and practical appreciation of issues, allow us to provide robust advice and leadership that reflects an understanding of commerciality, risk and opportunity. We helped secure consent for Hornsea Three, which will be the UK’s largest offshore windfarm. LDA Design is proud to be 100% employee owned. We are landscape architects, urban designers, planners, environmental planners and EIA coordinators.

Some good news to share. We’re delighted to be continuing our work in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with London Legacy Development Corporation via their new four-year landscape and public realm framework. The framework will realise a collection of key projects that will help the Park to continue to thrive, improving movement and access to #ActiveTravel links, and better connecting both physically and culturally with the communities that have this incredible asset on their doorstep. Ruth Lin Wong Holmes, LLDC’s Head of Landscape and Public Realm at QEOP, said the framework will help them to “work with the right consultants to build a sustainable and resilient landscape and public realm throughout the Park and its neighbourhoods.” LDA Design has been involved with the Park since we took on its landscape masterplanning in 2008, for the 2012 Olympic Games. On this framework we will continue our support through Strategy, Research and Studies, and Design Services. A big thank you to all those on our team, including Daisy Froud and Norman Rourke Pryme | Certified B Corp™️. And well done to LDA Design’s Robert Aspland Scott Carroll Kirsty Barker Eve Lewis and Lindsey Aspland. Before we all hunker down with our hot chocolates and forget what it feels like to have an ice cream with the wind in our hair, we wanted to share our short film of #Southsea and the sections of the seafront transformation that have completed so far - with more to come later this year and next. The Southsea Coastal Scheme in Portsmouth is the UK’s largest local authority-led coastal defence project. The £180 million scheme covers a 4.5km stretch of coast, reducing the risk of #flooding and protecting more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses. The scheme is also being seized as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for transformative placemaking, with new public spaces, promenades, planting, play and seating, all integrated with the coastal defences. The film captures moments of what we all feel when we're by the coast, and when we take some time to slow down and take our feet off the peddles (watch the girl at the end - you'll see). Places that are well designed, that bring you close to nature, that delight and feel cared for make people act differently, lightening our spirits, lifting the load. Coastal communities across the UK face increasing flood risk. But many also experience acute social challenges from poorer economic opportunities, health and education, the result of inadequate investment and support. There is enormous potential for coastal defence projects to achieve wider change alongside protecting homes and businesses from sea level rise. Southsea is showing the way. Well done to all involved. Could the redesign of Old Street roundabout have ended up differently if it had started with a much greener vision? That's the question LDA Design director, Sophie Thompson’s, explores in her latest opinion piece for Building Design. magazine. Read 'The same old story here': https://lnkd.in/eBGhyREs Sophie didn't work on the Old Street roundabout project but she understands the challenges of this kind of scheme. Public space projects are investments in the future, jumping off points for a better place or city or way of living. They are also often very high profile and highly complex, with many stakeholders with often competing needs and the space itself heavily contested. They need a clear vision and set of outcomes from the start. It's an interesting article - well worth a read. 📢 Last call if you want to submit your project/s to the Fields in Trust to be in the running to be featured in their guidance as one of the UK's best examples of public open spaces. LDA Design is supporting Fields in Trust and we're looking for a range of projects, from city parks to #community woodlands, and everything in between including playing pitches, outdoor sports and play spaces 🤾♀️ 🌳 ⚽ 🌼 🏓 A quick recap. This is for an update of the Fields in Trust’s 'Guidance for Outdoor Sport and Play: Beyond the Six-Acre Standard' and we're particularly interested in projects that have been created using this guidance. What were the key challenges you had to overcome? What long-term management is in place to ensure the space feels cared for? How did you make it accessible, safe and inclusive? How big a factor was climate resilience in your design? Here’s the form to complete by Thursday 31 October, if possible (let us know if you need more time): https://lnkd.in/etc92-us Also help us spread the word. 📣 We’ve been working with the people and businesses of Royal Leamington Spa on a ten-year vision for the town that puts #health and #wellbeing at the heart of change. The town’s Pump Rooms opened in 1814 ensuring Leamington Priors (as it was then known) made the most of its springs to become a successful spa resort. Queen Victoria gave it Royal status in 1838. When we started working in #Leamington, we were interested to find out what putting health and wellbeing back at the centre of life here would look like. So, the vision is based around three pillars: Healthy People, Healthy Place and Healthy Planet. The aim is to make the centre climate resilient and livelier with new uses and activities, helping Parade - the town's main street and one of England's finest - to thrive. What if the sound of water replaced the sound of traffic in the centre of Leamington? How nice might that be. Great working with Warwick District Council Warwickshire County Council and Leamington Spa Town Council and local businesses. More on this story here: https://lnkd.in/ejbYgxxD Find out more about the vision here: https://lnkd.in/ecjX6RHd Bernie Foulkes Tim South Sophie Thompson Lee White #Warwickshire #LeamingtonSpa #spatown #placemaking #bettertown #healthystreets #healthytown #climateresilience #socialequity #climateresilience #placemakingplan

LDA Design is 45. We started out in the age of free-market economics and when, sadly, a sense of community was beginning to fall away. And now, 45 years on, the challenges of #climate, #nature recovery and social equity are great, but the world is back to understanding how important #community and problem-solving together is. Encouragingly, there’s a groundswell of people who want to create a future that puts #wellbeing, climate and nature at the heart of change. LDA has been an #employeeowned business for three of these 45 years, and this move has altered pretty much everything. Our employee owners want to work in a world in which they and their friends and families prosper. A world where care, in its broadest sense, is valued. As designers and planners, they want us to succeed by helping create the future they aspire to. Some thoughts from Frazer Osment, LDA Design’s Chair, on the then, the now and the future: https://lnkd.in/dndXkHjC And join us as we blow out our birthday candles 🎂. Our wish is for a better world. But we’re doing more than wishing for it, we’re helping to make it. #LDADesign #anniversary #45 #birthday #bettertowns #bettercities #employeeowned #employeeowners #EO #culture #landscapearchitects #planners #urbandesigners #eia #environmentalplanners #masterplanning #placemaking #design
