Last week, LFN founder Paul Powlesland was called to serve on a jury. For his oath, he decided to swear on what was most sacred to him: nature, via his local River Roding, represented in the courtroom by a water sample in a small bottle. Paul tweeted about it, thinking it might get some online appreciation -- but it ended up getting a lot more media interest than he anticipated! In our latest blog post, Alex May shares his thoughts on the recent Rights of Nature development of the River Doce Mouth Waves. How different is establishing an inorganic flow pattern as a legal subject instead of a 'living entity'? And does it matter that the waves are being protected primarily for human benefit, and not ecological protection? He argues that there is no particular reason why, with law as a social construct, an inorganic process should be treated differently to representations of organic beings. And despite being for human benefit, it still forms part of a broader alliance with non-human interests, better linking surfers to upstream causes. We Are Nature: A campaign to change the dictionary definition of #Nature 🌿 Did you know? The dictionary still separates humans from nature. However, we are not onlookers, we are participants, inseparable from the web of life that surrounds us. Jessica Mond Wedd from Lawyers for Nature and Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle from House of Hackney want to change that. The aim of the project is to highlight our connection and interdependence with Nature. They want our dictionaries to reflect the scientific fact and overwhelming consensus that humans are part of Nature, just as animals, plants and other products of the earth are. They are driving positive change by redefining nature, advocating for policies and practices that protect and sustain the natural world we depend on. How to get involved?
