Earlier this week during the annual ‘Ride the Lights’ event in Blackpool, our officers were out and about making sure everyone was enjoying the evening safely 🚲 Whilst PC Nelson was chatting to the public, looking out for anything untoward, he couldn’t have imagined what was about to unfold. His attention was quickly brought to a lady who had fallen down to the sea after slipping off the sea defence walls just as the tide was starting to rapidly come in 🌊 Knowing the danger she’d be in and thinking quickly, PC Nelson, along with his colleagues, ran to her aid, throwing a life ring out and pulling her to safety; have a watch below 👇 Whilst the lady was shaken, she received medical attention and has now made a full recovery thanks to PC Nelson’s incredibly swift actions, which just go to show that our officers have to be ready to attend to any kind of emergency at all times. This is the moment Roger Haywood was arrested for his part in the disorder in Blackpool almost two weeks ago. Whilst the resort was busy with families enjoying the weekend, Haywood spouted abuse, encouraged others to be violent and assaulted our officers who were there to keep Blackpool safe. Despite singing about how much he loves England, he caused havoc in his own town, ripping the shutters up of a store in the Hounds Hill centre, before assaulting a member of their security team. He led a mob through Blackpool and beckoned them to breach our police cordon, intent on disorder. Today he has been jailed for 30 months.

Over the past few weeks our officers have dealt with serious disorder in Lancashire. They have faced violence and abuse with bravery, whilst putting themselves in the path of danger to keep the public safe. Sadly, this is not an uncommon ask of our officers – as PC Ashley Aspinall knows too well. PC Ashley was on his usual response shift in Blackpool on the evening of on 7th April 2023, when he was assaulted on duty. Intoxicated defendant Ian Scott was ejected from a bar, became verbally abusive and refused to leave the area despite several warnings. As he resisted arrest, he tackled PC Ashley to the ground, causing the officer a serious head injury. As PC Ashley’s colleagues were giving him life-saving treatment, Scott was continuing to mock and abuse him. It's been a long road to recovery for PC Ashley and the impact on his family and colleagues has been immense and ongoing. He ended up being in hospital for 11 days and it was a further four months before he was able to return to the job he loves. But of one thing we’re certain – assaults on emergency service workers will never be considered ‘just part of the job’. Our officers are more than their uniform. They are people, with families and lives outside of their day job. They come to work every day to make a difference, to serve and protect. Regardless of what you think about them, they will put themselves between you and danger, without hesitation, if you needed them. Scott, 50, of Cavendish Road, Bispham, was arrested and later charged with a Section 18 Assault and assaulting a police officer. He was given a 24-month suspended sentence, ordered to complete a 120-day alcohol abstinence requirement and undertake 200 hours of unpaid work. More 👉 https://orlo.uk/D5mwb
