Preventing potential problems and addressing existing ones where boys are missing a father-figure in their lives.

About us

Based in Tendring, North East Essex, Lads Need Dads CIC is a multi-award winning Not-For-Profit Community Interest Company, set up to prevent potential problems and address existing ones where boys are missing a father-figure in their lives. We do this by providing: •A male-led group Mentoring Programme •Bush-craft survival training and outdoor activities •On-going support and life-skills training •Volunteering opportunities •Leadership and Peer mentoring Through our work we increase boys confidence, self-esteem, resilience and more importantly, emotional intelligence and the ability to manage emotions. With input from our male mentors both boys and mums see the valuable role men play in the lives of boys. This has led to increased contact with fathers. Our work ‘supports’ Dads and values their role. Ultimately, however, our work is focussed primarily on supporting, equipping and empowering boys. Our work also supports the mothers and carers of the boys as we recognise their well-being is critical and can influence the boys development. We have a family support team who offer regular remote support and advice and work together with the male mentor team, schools and outside agencies. The team of Directors work and/or have a background in Education, Criminal Justice, Health and Social Care and the Statutory and Voluntary Sector. Referrals to the Programme are made via the school we are working with, or direct via parent / carer so please contact us or your school (if you are a parent or young person) to check if we are running a programme currently. For schools who would like to enlist our services please contact us via our Contact Us page on the website. If you would like to get involved as a volunteer, mentor, sponsor or donor please contact us directly via LinkedIn or email [email protected]

What a week! Wrapping things up before heading out to celebrate a friend’s 50th birthday, but before doing so wanted to share my last update of the week, this time from our Engage community volunteering programme at Lads Need Dads. Today two of our 12-year-old LND mentees, alongside two of our dedicated mentors, stepped up to assemble four much-needed shelving units for our storage unit. Not only did they gain valuable life skills, but they also helped us directly as we worked together to get organised. While they were busy with the shelves, I tackled a long-overdue clear out—and a carload of rubbish later, we now have a far more efficient storage space! The lads gained practical experience, we got a tidy unit, and we all came away feeling accomplished. Win-win! Now to tackle the much trickier job of what to wear this evening 😳😂 #LadsNeedDads #YouthDevelopment #LifeSkills #CommunityVolunteering #PracticalSkills #MentoringMatters #TeamWork #EmpoweringYoungMen #SocialImpact #OrganisedForSuccess

Inspiring the Next Generation: Engineering Insights from BAE Systems’ Ryan Gaffney It was such a pleasure to welcome Ryan Gaffney from BAE Systems to our Clacton-on-Sea base this evening where he met some of our Lads Need Dads ambassadors and mentors. Ryan shared his expertise and experience on: 🔍 The defence industry and what BAE Systems is all about 🔧 His journey in engineering and business development 🚀 Pathways to join BAE Systems (Apprenticeship & Graduate Schemes) 📈 Top tips for career development Ryan reached out a few months ago with an interest in volunteering, and while his location made regular volunteering challenging, (he’s based up North!) we jumped at the chance to have him visit and speak to our young ambassadors (ages 15-18) about his career. Ryan’s insights truly resonated with both our lads and mentors! He connected effortlessly with the group, engaging them right from the start. His ambitious and tenacious approach, along with reminders that hard work and dedication in education, pay off, were exactly the kind of messages we strive to share with our boys. A truly inspiring session! Thank you so much Ryan and thank you BAE Systems for enabling Ryan to attend despite his busy work schedule. We hope to see you again 🙏 #LadsNeedDads #Engineering #DefenceIndustry #BAESystems #CareerDevelopment #YouthEmpowerment #STEM The Centre for Social Justice Gordon MacSween Andy Routley Joel Shaljean Mike Hulse Indigo Weller

On World Mental Health Day, I’m reflecting on one of the aspects of our work at Lads Need Dads that I’m most proud of: how we’ve helped many young men who’ve struggled with suicidal thoughts or found life too overwhelming. It’s a sobering reminder of why we do what we do. Having spent nearly three decades working in criminal justice, substance misuse, anger management, and homelessness, I know firsthand how at-risk males are. The statistics tell a stark story: men are vastly overrepresented. Too often, the root of the issue lies in fatherlessness or strained relationships with their fathers, which is why I founded Lads Need Dads. Did you know that 70% of suicides aged 10-19 in 20/21 were boys. Boys are five times less likely to talk to Childline about their mental health than girls and even less likely to talk about suicidal thoughts.(14% boys compared to 86% of girls talked about suicidal thoughts) (Childline 2022.) Father absence is considered one of the most significant social factors contributing to these outcomes, even surpassing race and socioeconomic status in its impact on children’s well-being. (https://lnkd.in/eB9pS5Nf). Today, I’m sharing a powerful video featuring Charlie, one of our long-term participants, who has grown into an inspiring young man. Charlie came to us at just 12 years old, not long after losing his father. For the past six years, we’ve walked alongside him, witnessing his growth into a confident, respectful, and engaging individual. Now, he’s not only a Lads Need Dads ambassador but also an aspiring mentor to our younger lads. This video was filmed when Charlie was 16, but I chose to wait until he turned 18 to share it, with his permission. It felt important to let him reach adulthood first. Today feels like the right time to share his story on such a pertinent day and he agrees. Let’s continue the conversation about mental health and support those who need it most but give special consideration and thought to males who are fatherless as they are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. Proud moment for Lads Need Dads! Last night, three of our fine LND ambassadors Charlie, Alby, and Harley, had the privilege of attending a key event in London, co-hosted by True.Global and the Centre for Social Justice. With the aim of equipping all young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed, True.Global and The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) launched their new project:   'Maximising Potential: How can we build an education system that gives each student the best chance?' Lads Need Dads was one of five charities (which included: One eighty, Power2, Children Heard and Seen, Artis and Dallaglio RugbyWorks), selected to showcase its work to an audience of policymakers, academics, practitioners, and philanthropists—an incredible opportunity to share insights, explore solutions, and build meaningful partnerships. True.Global, known for helping businesses of all sizes achieve greatness through investment, support, and strategic innovation, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders. The goal of the evening was to identify innovative practices and successful solutions that could be scaled up for broader use. We heard inspiring talks from Paul Cocker founder of True, CEO of the Centre for Social Justice, Andy Cook, Head teacher Emma Bonnin and guest speaker for the evening former rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio. Our ambassadors represented us with excellence, engaging in thoughtful conversations and sharing their personal journeys with Lads Need Dads. Their stories truly resonated, demonstrating the impact of our programmes and the importance of our work in supporting young men. We received encouraging feedback from attendees, reinforcing our commitment to driving change. Here’s to hoping Lads Need Dads continues to be recognised as a model for solutions that address some of today’s pressing social challenges. 🚀 The Centre for Social Justice True. Dr Liam Waldron . Lads Need Dads Car Maintenance Workshop 🚗 What an incredible evening with the boys on our Engage programme. https://lnkd.in/e5VRWaGE We started the night with a high-energy game of dodgeball, as the lads worked hard to keep up with two of our newest recruits—Charlie, (18) our very own LND graduate and Ambassador, and 19-year-old trainee mentor, Dan. 🏀💪 After some fun, we moved into our regular check-in session, where boys and mentors had the opportunity to share how they were feeling and connect with each other. A key part of LND’s approach. Our veteran mentor, Mick, who has been part of LND for an incredible 7 years, then led the evening’s main event. As a retired Chartered Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, Mick shared his expertise, explaining different methods of vehicle propulsion and the operation of internal combustion engines—giving the boys valuable theoretical knowledge. Then, it was time to get hands-on! The lads learned essential car maintenance skills, from checking engine oil, brake fluid, and washer fluid, to changing a car wheel in case of a puncture. 🛠️🚗 A huge thank you to Mick and our team for delivering such a practical and engaging workshop! And well done to all the boys for their enthusiasm and hard work. 💪 #LadsNeedDads #LifeSkills #CarMaintenance #Mentoring #EmpoweringYoungMen #Teamwork

📢 Empowering young minds in Tendring💡 Last night, we ran a stimulating workshop for our ambassador group based in Clacton-on-sea, our young men aged 15-18 – focusing on the crucial topic of money management. We covered the importance of budgeting and living within your means and understanding how deductions from wages, such income tax and National Insurance contributions work and why they exist. What really stood out was the vibrant discussion around what they'd do if they were given £1,000. Many spoke about saving, investing in stocks and shares, and other smart financial choices – which highlighted an important need for future workshops on subjects like this, together with topics such as debt and credit and not to mention pensions, a topic that isn't often covered with young people or thought about until middle age. 💬 If you work in the finance sector and specialise in any of the above topics we would love to hear from you! We are looking for experts to help educate and inspire these young men on important financial topics. Let's help equip the next generation with the tools they need for a secure financial future! #FinancialEducation #YouthEmpowerment #EssexCommunity #MoneyMatters #Workshops #FutureLeaders Chris Morgan Nick H 💙

Up-skilling for the road ahead! This week saw the commencement of another Engage practical lifeskills programme, https://lnkd.in/e5VRWaGE this time with our Tendring cohort based in Clacton, which kicked off with a really equipping bike maintenance workshop! 🚲 The boys not only learned the practical skills of using a bicycle pump, pressure gauge, removing and replacing an inner tube, and maintaining a bike chain, but also gained insights into the importance of self-reliance and problem-solving. These hands-on lessons build confidence and empower them to take responsibility for their own equipment. The session, led by our dedicated mentor Matt, showed how cycling can be enjoyed not just as a means of transportation, but also as a lifelong hobby and even a competitive sport. It was inspiring to see the boys’ enthusiasm and teamwork as they tackled each task, supporting one another throughout. A huge thank you to mentors Joel, Pete, and our ambassador Charlie for their amazing support and guidance during the session! Every step we take helps build stronger, more capable young men 😀. #LifeSkills #BikeMaintenance #ClactonEngage #YouthDevelopment #Empowerment #FutureLeaders Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner for Essex

Bank holiday fun… Yesterday we wrapped up the school summer holidays with one final adventure in London with some of our fabulous Colchester Ambassadors. Our journey began in Westminster, starting with lunch and some testing of strength and agility 🤪 in Archbishops Park, and a walk over Westminster Bridge where we soaked in some of London’s most iconic landmarks. The highlight of the day was our visit to Madame Tussaud’s on Baker Street - an experience that left us all inspired. 🤩 We then explored Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, and ended the day with a Nando’s in Covent Garden, (boys choice 😀), topped off with gelato at the Embankment while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere along the South Bank. The day was filled with great fun, laughter, and memories. It’s so important that we give our boys and young men days out like these to just relax, have fun and be treated. They are soon to go into Year 11, where revision / mocks and GCSE’s loom. Just great to give them a day away from any worries to help equip them for what lays ahead. ☺️ A huge thank you to our generous donors - your support made this unforgettable day possible. 🙏 Joel Shaljean Bradley Greensmith Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner for Essex

"When we went down to the woods today…” 🌳🍯 Today some of our youngling LND boys had a truly enlightening morning at Hammonds Farm in Fordham, Colchester, where we explored the fascinating world of bees and tasted their delicious honey! 🐝 The highlight for the boys was a cleverly designed treasure hunt around the farm, put together by the wonderful owner #EmmaBarr, which led us directly to the buzzing beehives. Brian the beekeeper provided an engaging and hands-on talk, educating us on the critical role bees play in our ecosystem. It was a morning filled with learning, adventure, and a deepened respect for these essential pollinators. We wrapped up with a delightful picnic in the woods, enjoying honey tastings on a variety of freshly baked breads, bagels, pancakes, and cakes. 🍞🥯🥞 This experience has given us all a greater appreciation for the vital work of bees and their impact on our environment. 🌸🌍. ☺️ Warren Farrell, PhD Andy Routley Joel Shaljean Gordon MacSween Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner for Essex #beekeeping #honey
