  • Huge congratulations to Callie-Ann Warrington, Diagnostic Radiographer at the Princess Royal University Hospital, on her incredible achievement of winning a silver medal in the S10 100m Butterfly para swimming event at the Paralympics this week!   In addition, Callie-Ann placed 4th in the final of the S10 100m Freestyle para swimming event on 1st September, setting a new British record.   We recently spoke to Callie-Ann about her inspiring journey. She told us she has an impairment which affects the left side of her body and causes uncontrollable spasms and contractions of the muscles.   Despite these challenges, she’s been swimming since she was 16 weeks old. However, due to pool closures during the pandemic, she experienced a loss of mobility in her left leg, making it impossible to kick in the water.   Callie is also autistic, and the water has become her happy place, with swimming benefiting both her physical and mental health and says that her mum and dad have been a big inspiration in her becoming a swimmer.   “My mum wanted me to learn to swim because she never got that opportunity to and she always said she wanted her children to learn to swim,” Callie said. “If it wasn’t for my mum and dad, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They have devoted their life to swimming as much as I have and to have their support is lovely.   We are immensely proud of Callie-Ann, not only for her remarkable achievements in the pool but also for the inspiration she continually provides to our hospital and local communities.   Join us in celebrating Callie-Ann’s achievements and read more about her journey here: https://bit.ly/3XpAmZG    Image: Callie-Ann Warrington (pictured left)   #TeamKings #ParalympicsGB #Radiographer

  • We're pleased to announce that Dr Mamta Shetty Vaidya has been appointed as King’s new Chief Medical Officer.   Mamta, a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist, is currently Chief Medical Officer at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, before which she was Deputy Medical Director at The Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, where she worked for more than 15 years.   She will take up the Chief Medical Officer role at King’s in January 2025. Dr Leonie Penna, the Trust’s Chief Medical Officer, had planned to retire from the role at the end of February next year, but unfortunately, she has had to stand down from the position with immediate effect for personal reasons.   As a result, Ms Rantimi Ayodele, Site Medical Director for PRUH and South Sites and Deputy Chief Medical Officer, will become the Acting Chief Medical Officer at the Trust until Mamta takes up her role at King’s in the New Year.   Mamta said: “I’m really looking forward to joining the leadership team at King’s. This is an exciting opportunity for me, and I am looking forward to getting to know colleagues across the Trust, and doing everything I can to support them to deliver high quality care for patients, and local communities.”   Professor Clive Kay, Chief Executive at King’s, welcomed Mamta’s appointment:   “Mamta was the stand-out candidate for the role, and her passion for people, and supporting patients and the colleagues she works with, shone through. I am looking forward to Mamta joining us here at King’s later this year.”   Professor Kay also thanked Leonie for her contribution in her role as Chief Medical Officer role:   “Leonie has provided outstanding leadership throughout her time as Chief Medical Officer at King’s, including supporting the Trust through the COVID-19 pandemic.   “Leonie is a huge champion of the Trust, and the work of our staff, so I would like to thank her for everything she has done, and continues to do, for colleagues and patients at King’s.”   “I am also very grateful to Rantimi for covering the Chief Medical Officer role at King’s until Mamta joins us next year.”   #TeamKings

  • We're continuing with our #BrilliantPeople series, which celebrates some of the many and varied roles held by staff at King’s, including healthcare professionals and non-clinical staff.   Today, we meet Dr Lisa Long, an Obstetric Consultant at King's College Hospital.   In the video, Lisa said:   "Why I love coming to work every day. It's undoubtedly the teams. The team of Midwives, Clerical Staff, Porters, and Healthcare Assistants I work with on a day-to-day basis.    "I have a varied week and role. I look after mums in the antenatal, postnatal and labour periods. I do antenatal clinics; I perform caesarean sections and I look after women in the labour ward as well.   "It's just an absolute privilege to be part of people's growing families. I think as a doctor, it's a really interesting side of medicine because you've got two people to look after, mum and baby at the same time."   #TeamKings #NHS #Obstetric

  • We are delighted to announce that Mira Osinibi, Paediatric Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist at King’s College Hospital, has been shortlisted for a Nursing Times award in the Children’s Services category.   The Nursing Times Awards consist of 25 categories covering a wide range of fields and specialties from mental health to care in the community, as well as diversity and inclusion.   Mira has been recognised for her work to help adolescents understand the dangers of vaping. She explained: “Our service helps parents and adolescents give up smoking, and since 2020 we have seen an increase in vaping among our young patients. Although vaping is less harmful than smoking, it comes with its own health risks, especially for young people whose lungs have not fully developed.   “There is clearly a need for up-to-date information and education around this issue, so as part of my role as a Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist, I developed an educational talk for secondary schools, tailored for young audiences, with information about the harm caused by adolescent vaping. Since December 2022, I have spoken to around 15,000 children aged 11-18 years old within London, Kent and Brighton.   “We are now using our knowledge to educate and inform our colleagues in different NHS Trusts around the UK, with the aim of helping younger patients be more aware of the harms of vaping, and to help give up the habit.   “This nomination and shortlisting of such a prestigious nursing award feels very special to me. I am fully dedicated to health prevention and to have the award panel recognise this initiative as innovative, inclusive and patient-focused means the world to me. I feel very proud to be working in King’s College Hospital with my paediatric respiratory team who continuously support my work. I am particularly thankful to our Head of Nursing Children’s Health, Sarah Harris, and Paediatric Respiratory Consultant, Dr Cara Bossley, for their ongoing positive encouragement towards this project.”    Read more from Tracey Carter, Chief Nurse and Executive Director of Midwifery at King’s College Hospital on our website: https://bit.ly/4c0Ogp5    #TeamKings #NursingTimesAwards
