🚨 Could you help fund a journalism fellow on our 2024/25 scheme? 🗞️ We’ve received almost double the number of applications compared to last year, showing an incredible demand for early-career support. Thanks to our brilliant sponsors — Newsworks, The Printing Charity, Association of British Science Writers, and Women In Journalism — we are currently able to support 10 fellows through 1-2-1 mentoring, training & workshops, a paid commission, and professional editorial support. Following the volume of high-standard applications we received, we would really like to raise the funds to sponsor at least two more fellows, so would love to hear from any potential corporate sponsors. It costs just £650 to support a fellow and to help them take their first steps into the industry. From last year’s scheme alone, 80% of our fellows have since secured further paid work, and since 2020 — when the fellowship began — the 30+ fellows we’ve supported have gone onto work for organisations including The Financial Times, The Guardian, Positive News, Newsquest, and Estates Gazette. If you're starting out in audio, the first step is creating just one listener in your mind, says Janey Lee Grace, a former BBC Radio 2 presenter. Radio is a personal medium — you want to feel like the presenter is just talking to you. For Janey, it all started with a cutout picture of a Black cab driver. "My show [on BBC Radio London] was really early on a Sunday morning, and I’d had messages from cab drivers. So I thought, well, that’s as good an audience as any to imagine. I really wanted the show to appeal to a really wide variety of people, so a London cabbie felt exactly right for me. The Fund for Investigative Journalism Application deadline 27 January 2025 Investigative journalists can apply for a reporting grant. The grants, sponsored by the Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), are intended to support investigative projects that break new ground and expose wrongdoing – such as corruption, malfeasance or misuse of power – in the public and private sectors. FIJ also offers expedited grants for urgent stories, follow-up grants for timely stories after initial investigations and seed funding for preliminary reporting that can lead to full investigations. The maximum award is US$10,000, which should cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel costs, document collection and equipment rental. The first half of the grant is given once an application is approved and the second half is paid when the project is complete. Proposals must come from U.S.-based reporters or journalists whose stories have a U.S. angle, involving American citizens, government or businesses. Stories must be published in English. Proposals must be submitted in English and include a detailed budget. The next deadline to apply is 27 January 2025.
