We recently shared that the Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge has funded three new projects to replace insulin-making beta cells in people living with type 1 diabetes. The new projects take inspiration from ticks, brain cells and tiny molecules that influence our genes: Dr Craig Beall and Dr Thomas Piers at the University of Exeter will explore whether a type of brain cell that makes insulin can be used to develop long-lasting, effective beta cell therapies for T1D which are resistant to the type 1 immune attack. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/etTA5ZRP 🧠 Dr Aida Martinez-Sanchez and Dr Prashant Srivastava at Imperial College London will investigate how tiny molecules called microRNAs change the function of insulin-making beta cells. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/egZ-i6Xw 🧬 Prof Shoumo Bhattacharya and Prof David Hodson at the University of Oxford will take inspiration from tick saliva to develop a defence mechanism for beta cells transplanted into people with T1D. 🚨 Exciting cure research news! 🚨 Clinical trials of lab-grown insulin-making cells in the US have moved into phase 3, which is the final stage of the clinical trials process aimed at gathering data for regulatory approval. This is first time a treatment to cure type 1 diabetes has reached this stage! Find out more 👇
Breakthrough Update: Today, Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced that they are beginning their Phase 3, or pivotal trial for VX-880, a stem cell-derived islet therapy. A pivotal trial gathers the data required for an FDA submission. This therapy is for people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and hypoglycemia unawareness and severe hypoglycemic episodes. This is a HUGE first for the #T1D community as it is the first time a scalable cure for some people with T1D is entering this phase. Breakthrough T1D and the T1D Fund are incredibly proud to have supported this work in cell therapies—a top priority for our organization. We want to congratulate our partners at Vertex and thank all the patients who have participated in clinical trials. Your courage and commitment are inspiring. “Our hope is for the film to reach far and wide and to help people understand a little more about the condition and the research and support provided by Breakthrough T1D. Everywhere I go, I bump into people living with or who know someone with type 1, so the awareness is really needed.” - Tara, mum of Tahlia who lives with T1D. Today marks the start of Diabetes Awareness Month.
