Following months of speculation and uncertainty, Rachel Reeves's first Budget is the largest tax raising Budget since that of Norman Lamont in 1993, with around £40bn being raised for government programmes of "national renewal" and a growing "black hole" in public finances. Whilst the Budget wasn’t as costly to SME’s as predicted, the main tax hike is the increase in the Employers National Insurance rate from 13.8% to 15% with effect from April 2025, among many other significant changes.
