IMPA is an international partner of the Capacity Building & Technical Cooperation Group, led by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), which brings together key organisations such as the International Maritime Organization, World Meteorological Organization, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), IALA, and FIG - International Federation of Surveyors to collaborate on projects that positively impact the global community. The group meets annually to review procedures, align work programmes, identify funding opportunities, and share experiences in delivering Capacity Building and Development initiatives. For more information on the group’s work, visit: https://lnkd.in/dhqp3BCQ At our 13th meeting, we held productive discussions on key initiatives, including training on S-100 implementation and Maritime Safety Information. We also explored ways to raise awareness of career opportunities for women in hydrography, pilotage, and others within our industry. #internationalmaritimepilots #genderbalance #safetyfirst

Fostering Maritime Safety representing the global community of Maritime Pilots
About us
The International Maritime Pilots’ Association (IMPA) is a non-profit organisation with a global focus and has held consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) since 1973. Representing over 8000 maritime pilots across various countries in five continents, IMPA represents approximately 70% of licensed pilots worldwide, delivering over two million acts of pilotage each year. IMPA’s main objective is the promotion of professional and safe pilotage, which aims to achieve by employing two principal strategies: 1. Facilitating the collaboration of pilot associations worldwide, providing a platform for exchanging common concerns, comparing experiences, and the collective pooling of expertise. This collaborative approach is the foundation for formulating IMPA's views and policies. 2. Active involvement in the work of the IMO to improve maritime safety and security as well as the protection of the environment by providing expertise in the field of Pilotage.

This week, IMPA Secretary General, Matthew Williams presented more details on IMPA’s project to explore remote pilotage in mandatory pilotage areas at Remote Pilotage Days. The event, organised by FINNPILOT, brought together over 60 delegates. IMPA took the opportunity to remind everyone that any decisions about a potential role for remote pilotage in mandatory pilotage waters should be based on objective evidence and that national pilots’ organisations and their competent authorities. #impa #internationalmaritimepilots #theinternationalpilot

This week, our President, Simon Pelletier, updated colleagues and delegates to the New Zealand Maritime Pilots' Association Conference in Christchurch on the work done in 2024 to promote pilotage as a public service and the safety of pilots on duty. Meeting with our Members and their stakeholders is critical to IMPA’s work. It is an opportunity for our community to hear how IMPA serves their interests and for national stakeholders to see that their national pilots’ organization is part of an international, professional community. There were productive discussions about IMPA’s work at IMO and positive feedback on the announcement that IMPA will conduct a study exploring the concept of remote pilotage in mandatory pilotage waters. #impa #internationalmaritimepilots #theinternationalpilot

The 56th edition of The International Pilot magazine is now available to our members. This edition's cover features the IMPA Executive Committee following the re-election of Vice Presidents Capt André Gaillard and Capt Paul Schoneveld during the General Meeting at the 26th IMPA Congress in Rotterdam. This edition also includes a special contribution from the Sailors' Society, a welfare charity dedicated to supporting seafarers and their families, known to our members for their work on the wellbeing of maritime pilots. In our commitment to address the Human Element and as part of our CSR initiatives, IMPA has initiated collaborations with maritime charities. Our goal is to raise awareness about the crucial role played by the estimated 1.89 million seafarers who make global trade possible. We invite all interested maritime charities seeking a platform to promote their endeavours at no cost to contact Eliane Blanch at [email protected] for more information.
