On International #DayOfTheGirl Child: 👉 Six actions to improve adolescent health! 👈 We now have more evidence than ever to understand and inform effective approaches to address adolescents’ specific health risks and needs. The World Health Organization is highlighting six areas for immediate action - each requiring meaningfully engagmet with young people around decisions, programmes & services intended for them. 1️⃣ Teenage pregnancy: Comprehensive sexuality education, enabling laws and policies, and contraceptives access can prevent early and unintended adolescent pregnancies. 2️⃣ Harmful practices: Progress is linked to economic development, poverty reduction, and girls access to secondary school level education and employment. 3️⃣ STIs: Adolescent-responsive sexual and reproductive health services are essential - ensuring inclusive, non-stigmatizing access to information, education, prevention methods, and comprehensive sexuality education. 4️⃣ Violence against adolescents: Preventing violence against adolescent girls requires multi-sectoral action - WHO’s RESPECT women framework and INSPIRE programme highlight action steps. 5️⃣ Mental health crisis: Age-appropriate early detection and treatment, psychosocial support and training, and enhancing parenting skills can build resilience and protect adolescents’ mental health. 6️⃣ Healthy nutrition: Supporting healthy eating, physical activity, sleeping habits, limiting screen time and sugar consumption can promote healthy nutrition.
