The opportunity to build a major ‘new to industry’ service station is rare in the UK. Welcome Break, Newark Services opened in March 2023 and has already built a strong foodvenience performance in this customer friendly, premium space. Yesterday, I had the chance to visit this contender in the Insight Research ‘The Best Foodvenience Store in the World’ competition organised together with Invenco by GVR and sponsored by The Moseley Group and The Coca-Cola Company. ✅What makes for foodvenience success on the main motorway and A-road arteries of the UK? Well, strong foodservice brands like Greggs, Burger King, Starbucks, Pret A Manger and Budgens are often key customer drivers, powered by a highly motivated workforce team, many living nearby to the site. ✅Powered by people because ‘Brought Fresh to you every day’ means a 4.30am start to create the sandwiches, wraps and bake off products in the highly organised kitchen spaces, ready for the queues which begin at 5.30am as the truck drivers and customers in high vis come in for their protein to start the working day. Up to 70 HGV parking spaces in this location. Showers are on site in this Platinum ‘Loo of the Year 2023 Award winner. ✅The space efficient Pret A Manger is really well executed and I particularly liked the space efficiency of the whole amenity, allowing customers to access a broad choice of options. Value is important, the Greggs £3.55 Breakfast Sandwich & Coffee offer is a major seller and is often combined with a pick up bag for lunch on the road too. Look out for the gold star on pack which shows the product is a top seller that must not go out of stock (pic below). Elaine P. Is the UK going to get over its’ dip in EV sales growth quicker than other European markets? Our guess is yes. New, better and exciting EVs are everywhere from the Kia Europe EV9 (a real head turner and already beloved by the driver I chatted with), to the super new Tesla Model 3, a 70% re-engineered vehicle and a much better car. ⚡️Accessible, well maintained and abundant fast charging is vital of course and good to see Applegreen Electric on the road here now. Conor Lanigan and team! ⚡️The new UK Government have so far stayed deafeningly quiet on whether they will follow suit into Chinese EV Trade Tarifs and Chinese electric cars will likely be funnelled towards Britain as manufacturers seek to avoid punishing European Union tariffs. ⚡️A packed Tesla Super Charger Bay at Welcome Break Telford Serices yesterday evening as the UK builds for a busy late summer weekend on the road. Charging sensibly restricted to 80% max with massive demand. Seemed to be coping very well to me. Harry Fox

Powerful interview with Toddington Harper. 🌏⚡ My view is that GRIDSERVE ‘s electric forecourts in Braintree, Norwich and Gatwick are 'breakthrough' trend setters because they have created the best, most relaxing and 'elevated' atmosphere of almost any charging amenity space I've seen globally. 🌏 ⚡Above all Toddington recognises that the charging industry needs to make the charging experience fantastic and 'easy' to persuade more drivers to switch from petrol and diesel vehicles. Gatwick has 30 chargers, mostly 350KW, capable of providing 100 miles of charge in 5 minutes and then a space upstairs which is supremely relaxing. 🌏 ⚡For Toddington, the direction of travel is clear. The UK has signed up to a Climate Change Act and this is enshrined in UK law - meaning policy makers are obliged to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050, only 26 years away. 🌏 ⚡Given that the UK's new Prime Minister is committed to restoring the UK's 2030 ban on ICE vehicles, even if the UK Labour Party's massive majority only takes it to 2029, rather than 2034, it seems only logical to conclude that the UK's pace will now pick up again. A lot.. 🌏 ⚡The rapid roll out of reliable, nationwide charging networks (GRIDSERVE's motorway network is now charging around 200,000 vehicles each month), will make the experience of EV ownership much better. Perhaps now the UK has the most stable Government in Europe (because of its' huge majority), parts of the media will lose interest in delaying what is, in the UK anyway, now a seemingly inevitable consumer switch. I look forward to exploring more 🌏 ⚡EV Hubs of the future and meeting the great and inspirational leaders (like Toddington) behind them. As we begin our visit plans for new EV hubs from this Autumn onwards, do get in touch and let us know about your latest concepts - thank you to those who already have. Finally, a big thank you to our ‘Best EV Hub’ sponsors, we organised our 2024 competition together with Vontier and sponsored by Visa and The Coca-Cola Company.
