The Independent Schools Council (ISC) represents over 1,370 UK independent schools, which educate over 537,000 pupils.
About us
The Independent Schools Council (ISC) brings together seven associations of independent schools, their heads, bursars and governors. Through our member associations we represent over 1,370 independent schools in the UK and overseas. These schools are ranked among the best in the world and educate more than 537,000 children each year. The ISC’s work is carried out by a small number of dedicated professionals working out of our offices in central London. We are assisted by the contributions from expert advisory groups in specialist areas. Our priorities are set by the board of directors led by our chairman, Barnaby Lenon. We are tasked by our members to protect and promote the independent education sector in everything we do. The ISC has six principal activities: - Provide authoritative research and intelligence about the sector - Provide legal and regulatory information/guidance - Provide online access and support informing parental decisions - Promote the sector through agreed national messaging and communications - Provide a meeting place in central London for members - Promote public affairs and parliamentary engagement on behalf of the sector

Norfolk County Council has warned the government's plan to add VAT to independent school fees could push more children with SEND into mainstream schools. The council said it was struggling to meet rising costs of SEND provision, forecasting a £115m budget deficit by March. Jane James, cabinet member for corporate services, added that "many" independent schools catering for children with SEND were "in a fragile state", and if these were to close this would add "pressure to our mainstream schools" https://lnkd.in/efXZZEeC

"The government originally said that the rise in fees would be implemented in September 2025, giving us enough time to find a state school for him. But on 29 July, while we were away on our summer holiday, they announced that it would be implemented this coming January... We were blindsided, and the government have not given families much time." Speaking to iNews, a mother explains how her family is being impacted by the government's plan to add VAT to independent school fees. Sarah, whose son currently attends an independent school, has been unable to find a nearby state school place. The closest comprehensive is a 90-minute commute away, which she says is "just not doable" https://lnkd.in/e_dWzNd3

"We’ve been forced out of the state sector and now it feels like we are being forced out of the independent sector – and I’m left thinking where is my child welcome in this world?" Alexis Quinn, a single mother from Kent, is preparing to challenge the government's VAT on fees policy in the High Court on behalf of her 12-year-old autistic daughter, Addison. Lawyers have written to the Treasury arguing the policy discriminates against children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and have threatened court action if it is not dropped. https://lnkd.in/exZf3AwK
