🌍 Today, on International Day of Care and Support, we’re also celebrating the care and support between families and their loved ones with intellectual disabilities. Care and support go both ways, with families supporting independence while receiving support in return. 💬 As Mukabarisa Felicite shares, “I support my daughter to know her rights and be included in advocacy, peer groups, and decision-making. And she, in turn, teaches me resilience and courage every day.” 💬Aida María Peralta Tovar shares, “Luis Gabriel supports me more than I support him, especially as I get older. He takes care of the household and even brings me meals in bed—he’s my right-hand man.” 📹 Explore more stories in our family video gallery!

🌍 On International Day of Care and Support, we’re spotlighting the stories of self-advocates and the support they receive. Care isn’t just about assistance—it’s about supporting choice, independence, and voice. Through support that goes both ways, self-advocates are making big contributions to their communities. 💬 Samuella Gwiza Inema shares, “The support I get helps me be involved in family activities, giving me space to argue, make decisions, and participate in income-generating activities.” Many self-advocates also need more formal support from organisations, governments, and communities. Lorraine Bradley reflects, “Sometimes my worker thinks I’m independent all the time, but sometimes I could use a little help.” 💬 Luis Gabriel Villarreal Peralta told us about his family and supporters, “They care about my interests and make sure I can meet my goals. Worldwide, 1 out of 10 children has a disability. Most of these are in areas prone to crises or emergencies. Our collaboration with Education Cannot Wait and the International Disability Alliance is creating a roadmap to remove barriers and ensure inclusivity for these children.
