Helping cities and other urban areas become healthier places for everyone to live. Part of Guy's & St Thomas' Foundation
About us
We are Impact on Urban Health. We focus on improving health in inner-city areas. The places that we grow up, live and work impact how healthy we are. And where we work in London, like many other cities, is home to the best and worst health – often side by side. Through our work, we challenge health inequalities and help urban areas become healthier places for everyone to live. Formerly Guy's and St Thomas' Charity.

🚸 Clean air means better health for children. That’s why we’re supporting the @EllaRobertaFdn to campaign on the health effects of air pollution, with a particular aim to protect children from poor air quality. https://lnkd.in/eKB3kSgz

It's great to see this Blueprint from @Nesta. It represents a compelling body of evidence, but starts from a simple truth: the food system is broken, and it requires a comprehensive package of measures to fix. The great news is, those solutions exist. We know that shifting the dial on food-related ill health will require Government taking action to tweak incentives across the food industry. As the Blueprint outlines, a successful package will need to include fiscal measures, the introduction of healthy sales targets for large retailers and restrictions on the advertising of products high in fat, sugar and salt. This is a timely and important piece of work. Alongside the perspectives and lived experience of those people and communities most impacted by inequitable access to healthy food, it's exactly the kind of evidence Government should be taking seriously. https://lnkd.in/e4EGVn3X

"It is clear that the pollutants released by wood burning stoves are linked to negative health and environmental outcomes." 🔥 Brilliant, clear, objective guidance from Which? on how wood burning harms people and the environment 👏👏 https://lnkd.in/eSnWvfd5 "...one Ecodesign-compliant wood burning stove releases the same amount of particulate matter per hour as 18 newer diesel cars or six modern heavy goods vehicles." 🚚 🚚 🚚 🚚 🚚 🚚 😷 "...the concentration of PM2.5 in the home was almost 200% higher than normal when a wood burning stove was in use." 🪵 "The level of PM2.5 in the home while the wood burning stove was burning was between 27 and 195 micrograms per cubic metre of air." 🩺 For every increase of 10 micrograms, the risk of dying from cancer increases by 20%.

Today the Government published their first budget. But what does it mean for our health? 🩺 While it’s great the NHS gets essential funding, truly addressing health inequalities means focusing on root causes: Affordable, quality housing; children having their basic needs - like access to nutritious food - met; and everyone breathing clean air. https://lnkd.in/d3_JgZJ6 👨👧👦 The foundations for children’s mental health are a safe home, nutritious food, and space to create caring relationships. But since the election, 12,500 children have been pulled into poverty by the two-child benefit cap. It must be scrapped. https://lnkd.in/eMr7TXaA 🌬️ Throughout the country, people are still breathing dangerous levels of toxic air. The Government must support businesses to reduce their polluting emissions. https://lnkd.in/eQTiyz6z 🥤 We welcome the decision to strengthen the Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL). If the Government is to achieve its ambitions to create the healthiest generation of children ever, it must build on this progress by incentivising manufacturers to reformulate a wider range of unhealthy food and drink products through targeted fiscal measures. https://lnkd.in/dT2fpkU6 💷 We welcome the Chancellor’s decision to reduce the maximum debt repayment from Universal Credit from 25% to 15% - a positive step for households facing financial hardship. But there’s more to be done. We’re calling on HM Treasury to legislate a new funding model for debt advice, ensuring people in problem debt get the support they need. https://lnkd.in/e43N3pMJ The Spending Review in the Spring is an opportunity to invest in our health, and begin to build the healthier society we all deserve, and which is the foundation of a sustainable economy. Amersfoort is the first large Dutch city to fine people for using wood-burning fireplaces. 🪵🪓 Amersfoort is protecting residents from inhaling the harmful substances in wood smoke.
