IEMA Webinar: #NetZero principles for professional services providers with David Symons from WSP Join us for an interactive and engaging webinar on Thursday Nov 7th, covering two papers launched at this year's #NewYorkClimateWeek on the role of environmental consultants in accelerating net zero. We'll cover: 1. Catalysing Climate Action – the role of Professional Services in realising a Net Zero Future sets out a framework for how professional services companies can integrate net zero in their advice. 2. Estimating the greenhouse gas impact of our sector’s advice and designs. #PledgeToNetZero has been closely involved with both papers and this webinar will give a good summary of the work, together with plenty of opportunities to share your thoughts and feedback on the content. IEMA reacts to the #AutumnBudget - “One thing is certain. We desperately need bold action and investment.” Following weeks of speculation, the Chancellor finally took to the dispatch box earlier today to deliver the first Labour Budget in 14 years in which investment in carbon capture & storage and green hydrogen were confirmed. In this short blog, Ben Goodwin, IEMA's Director of Policy and Public Affairs, reflects on the key announcements for the UK's #naturalenvironment. Read now: https://bit.ly/3A74ct6 "There were references back to Labour’s clean energy mission, including the significant investment that is to be made in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and 11 new green hydrogen projects, with the Chancellor also committing to increase the windfall tax on oil and gas profits to 38%. "But overall, there were few specific interventions on climate and the natural environment in Rachel Reeve's carefully orchestrated speech....regardless of what was or wasn’t in the Budget today, we can and must get on with the job at hand.” #Budget2024

Nature finds its way into every nook and cranny here, but how far have the negotiators got at COP16 Colombia? Three points: Firstly, followers of the climate change COPs will not be surprised that funding, particularly for developing countries, is also a major issue at the biodiversity cycle of talks. The gap between what has been promised and what has actually been delivered is huge, and developing countries’ negotiators tell me it is impossible to plan for the long-term without the certainty of when the money will arrive. Secondly, DSI, or digital sequence information on genetic resources. This is a mechanism that aims to share the benefits of genetic information that is stored digitally, often from developing countries, and which is used by companies including pharmaceutical and agricultural organisations to (among other things) develop new products. The general principles were set out at the last COP in Montreal in Canada, but there is still disagreement about how much the contribution from companies should be, whether it should be voluntary or mandatory, who collects the money and who distributes it. Thirdly, NBSAPs, or national biodiversity strategies and action plans. The last COP requested that all countries revise and update these before the meeting in Columbia, but only a very few have done so. The ministerial negotiations will be starting later today here, and these are three of the issues that will need to be fully resolved, as well as questions around how to better align the biodiversity and climate change summits. Negotiators from many countries that I have spoken to are fairly positive that there will be forward movement in all these areas, but the pace of change can be frustratingly slow. IEMA Lesley Wilson
