Yesterday, we held the first 'New to Development' programme session at City of London School with speakers Susannah Baker and Kathrin Ostermann. The content of the session covered the fundamentals of establishing and resourcing an effective development office, how to create a fundraising strategy and what development means to each delegate in their school. During the session Susannah Baker reminded delegates of the origins of the word 'philanthropy' which comes from the Greek words philos (loving) and anthropos (humankind), and delegates discussed the value of engagement in embedding a culture of philanthropy. During yesterday's State School Forum, Jill Robinson, Director of Development at Jordanhill School, spoke about how she approaches thanking donors authentically, sharing how she "talks to donors in a letter the way that [she] would do when you meet for a coffee."
