𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬. 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨. Land-and-expand dreams often crash against invisible market barriers ❌. #Data quality, regulation and governance are tricky. What do the new #AI regulations mean for you? Are you looking down the governance cliff? How can you navigate this ever-evolving field? 🔶 Join us at the GCC eHealth Workforce Development Conference 2024 on Nov 5th-7th in Dubai and find out! 🟣 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐉𝐎𝐈𝐍 During three days you will be treated to the most comprehensive programme about the the WHAT, WHY, WHO and HOW of AI and Data in Healthcare in GCC. This is the best event in the region to become familiar with how AI/Data is being applied to #health settings and meet those who are shaping those decisions. 🟣 Where will you find me? • Digital Health Regulatory Forum (5th November) • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Forum November(7th November) • Health Information, Governance and Cybersecurity Forum (7th November) Look forward to joining my fellow speakers: Rizwan Tufail, Dr. Rachida Parks, PhD, Shantanu Mukherjee. Data and AI is on a 'catch me if you can"' mode vs regulation. The interplay between data and AI operationalization and monetization is not always smooth. Together we will cover questions such as: ✺How is data and AI governed vs how it should. ✺Are you sharing and transferring data in full compliance? ✺What is happening in GCC and the rest of the world? ✺Are you operating in the right markets? ✺What is your platform strategy? Should you have one? (and yes, we will make it fun and engaging and I will be wearing my #businessmodel hat 😎 ) 🟣 Thanks to Svetlana MWAN Events Osama Elhassan, Ph.D., FIHASI and ZIMAM for the opportunity. Well done for putting together such an incredible agenda. The biggest problem will be to choose which session to join (they are all so good). Just check the program and decide for yourself. On the back of GHE, I look forward to welcoming our friends from KSA Mustafa Alghali, Noor Alsaadoun, Amr Jamal, Ahmed Balkhair Ahmed Alnaji, Dr. Mohammed Alhamali, from the world such as my dear friends Dmitry Etin, Rahul Goyal and meet new ones such as Anne Forsyth. Red carpet mode on. 𝐀𝐈 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬. 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 #𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡! The European Innovation Council (EIC) has just approved €1.4 billion to support European deep tech research and high-potential #startups next year. 🟣The EIC Work Programme 2025 is built around three main #funding schemes: 1️⃣ EIC Pathfinder - €262 million for multi-disciplinary research teams to undertake visionary early-stage technology research and development with the potential to lead to technology breakthroughs (grants up to €4 million). 2️⃣ EIC Transition - €98 million to turn research results into innovation opportunities, following up on results generated by EIC Pathfinder, European Research Council Proof of Concept and Horizon Europe Pillar 2 (societal challenges) collaborative projects (grants up to €2.5 million). 3️⃣ EIC Accelerator - €634 million for start-ups and SMEs to develop, commercialise and scale up innovations with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones (grants below €2.5 million, investments from €500 000 to €10 million). In addition, the EIC Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) Scale-up scheme - €300 million - will provide additional equity funding to promising companies driving innovation in critical areas (SMEs, start-ups, spin-offs and small mid-caps) to help them secure larger private co-investment for further scaling their businesses (investments from €10 to €30 million). 🟣 Not sure how to get started❓ All potential applicants can join the EIC information days that will take place on 5th (general one) and 6th (EIC Accelerator Challenges) of November 2024. #womentechEU AcrossLimits Imperial Venture Mentoring Service (IVMS) 🟣 i-Expand#commercialization #biotechology #digitalhealth #entrepreneurship #healthtech #venturecapital #eic #entrepreneurship

𝐆𝐇𝐄24 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. Hospitality is deeply ingrained in Saudi Arabian culture. The language has 10+ ways to say welcome. If there was one expression for "welcoming innovation", I am sure it would include "Saudi Vision 2030". Here is why. 🟣 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝘈𝘭-𝘋𝘢𝘬𝘩𝘭𝘢 (the invitation) symbolises the generosity of Saudi society. From the moment we stepped off the plane, Global Health Exhibition - ملتقى الصحة العالمي and Tahaluf made the speakers feel very special. Thanks to Summaya, Felicia, and the team⭐ The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) put the golden touch with their warm welcome by Dr. Basma. GHE welcomed the health world (105K attendees), and they did so in style. 𝘈𝘩𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘪𝘬 𝘧𝘪 𝘢𝘭-𝘮𝘢𝘮𝘭𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘩 was felt everywhere. 🟣 𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝘈𝘏𝘓𝘈𝘕 𝘞𝘈 𝘚𝘈𝘏𝘓𝘈𝘕 Where is health innovation happening? ✺ 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠- KSA has devolved its central budgets to 20 clusters overseen by the HHC. The change of MoH from provider/regulator to regulator is tectonic. 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 will be crucial. Hospitals and health centres are now organised into 20 standalone clusters tasked to deliver quality integrated care. #Healthtech projects such as SEHA, Sehhaty's Digital Twin, and the Saudi Genome Program are pivotal. Most are #platforms. Our panel discussed how we can balance regulation and market forces in these new #digitalhealth ecosystems. Kristina, Dr. Mostafa, Dr Hadi, Nawfal thanks for the discussion greatly moderated by Rachel. Ultimately, each cluster needs to be financially independent. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐏𝐏𝐬 are key. ✺ 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡- Why this year's slogan? 1.Opportunity: Private health insurance market set to double by 2030 (SAR40B). 2.Momentum: SFDA Level 4. SNIH. R&D focus. 3.Money: FCG & HMG's IPOs, Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Hevolution Foundation make #health the fastest-growing sector. GHE announced SAR50B+ in deals. 👀 KSA is open to FDI. #FII8 this week underscores that. ✺ 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐒𝐀- Businesses start with ideas. Being part of the NextGen jury gave me a front-row view of the effort to attract innovations and the push to promote "Made in KSA". Congratulations to the finalists & winner Dr. Burhan. 🟣 𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐓 MARHABAN At the end of innovation, there are people. Yousuf, Meshari, Noor represent a new wave of young #entrepreneurship that combines tradition with renewed ambition. On that note, thanks to AmplifAI for hosting us and the calligraphy gift with a (thinner) version of me. A welcome sight after indulging in the rich traditional cuisine, such as in the wonderful Plexus reception (Amani). Lovely to meet old and new friends (tagged and not) #GHE24 offered a glimpse of how Saudi Vision will shape #healthcare. Come in 2025 and experience it yourself! (you are welcome) PS: Rachel hats off! 🟣 i-Expand#commercialization

🎗️ 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫. *Doctor: You have Stage 3 Breast Cancer. *Patient: But my last mammogram was clear, I don’t have family history and I am still young. What did I do wrong? *Doctor: We’re seeing more aggressive tumours in younger people. We don't know why. Back in 2018 I thought my fate was sealed. Luckily, I am still around to tell the story of how cancer is getting younger. 🟣 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐑 & 𝐀𝐆𝐄 For decades, the risk of developing cancer increased with age. However, a worrying trend has emerged: More young people are being diagnosed with advanced-stage cancers. In contrast, rates of cancer diagnosis and death are dropping in older people. Researchers are baffled. 🟣 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐆, 𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐅𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐔𝐒 A Nature study made a huge splash: Millennials are developing EO cancer at epidemic rates. Globally, EO cancer incidence rose by 80% from 1990 to 2019, with the fastest increase in the 15-39 age group. Cancer is already the primary cause of mortality in the 15–49 age group. Breast, digestive, and respiratory cancers are particularly lethal. 8 of 14 rising cancers impact the digestive system, with colorectal cancer now most common in those <50. Why are those rogue cells turning so aggressive❓ 🟣 𝐄𝐎 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐑: 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐃 Researchers are still defining the causal factors of this epidemic. Evidence points to two culprits: 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄- 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫 Environmental factors, including chemicals, diet, stressors, and lifestyle, impact biology and health. Collectively, they make up the exposome. Beyond diet and lifestyle, pollutants play a key role. Industrialization has increased exposure to harmful substances from prenatal stages, that may even affect embryonic development. Assessing exposures is challenging due to a lack of longitudinal studies. The #epigenome can provide historical footprint of exposures from early gestation, with DNA methylation serving as a a great proxy. 𝐒𝐔𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐈𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘- 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐭 Genetic, polygenic, or epigenetic predisposition affects how an individual responds to environmental exposures. The gut microbiome also impacts the immune system. 🟣 𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐑𝐈𝐁𝐁𝐎𝐍𝐒, 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 Understanding why this is happening is a priority. ✺Do young tumours evolve like those in older patients? ✺Does age affect drug response? Treatment algorithms based on senior samples lead to one-size-fits-all drugs. 🟣 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐑 𝐈𝐒 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 A cancer diagnosis in young individuals is especially challenging. While hair loss may be temporary, side effects such as infertility, depression, pain can be lasting. #Cancer is expensive too. What public #health measures do we take❓ How about the right to be forgotten by #insurers❓ How can #healthtech provide personalized treatments❓ Let's make cancer month history. 🟣 i-Expand#commercialization #digitalhealth #uae

𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 "𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬" 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳. After publishing the Annual Algorithm Report, research shows LinkedIn performance metrics are declining-for original creators 👀. Does the new LI algorithm prioritize AI-generated posts over original content❓ 🟣𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 Users report decreased views, follower growth, and engagement. Key metrics show that impressions, follower growth, and engagement have decreased significantly. Sponsored content and AI-generated posts now dominate feeds. Reportedly, most major content creators are experiencing reduced reach. In contrast, AI-generated or sponsored views have increased dramatically. Fun fact: LinkedIn seems to be favouring specific content topics around AI (don’t we all?) ✺ Is that a case of machine trumping human❓ ✺ Do we need to up the game in terms of original content quality❓ ✺ Will it matter ❓ 🟣The article prompted me to check. I don’t fall into the major creator category, but I am a frequent one. There is a gap in views compared to last year, which is paradoxical as engagement is even higher. Most worryingly, my wall used to be full with my favourite peers' content. Now suggestions to follow other people's posts (sponsored I guess) populate my feed. ✺ What is your experience❓ Philippe João Jon Vijay Aliya 🟣 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 LinkedIn is a formidable partner for B2B businesses. That extra view can put business owners and startups on the radar of the next partner, customer, investor. Don't let the wrong algo get in the way :) Let's keep it ORIGINAL. Happy Friday, everybody! The fuzz about FOSS? How companies make money by giving their product for free

View profile for Pilar Fernandez Hermida, graphic

Founder. We help Health Tech Companies Go to Market.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐳𝐳 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐅𝐎𝐒𝐒 (𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐈𝐈). Can a company make money by giving away their software? 👀 Conventional wisdom suggests it is not possible. However, a few Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) companies challenge that view. Are they more of an exception than a rule❓ Let's unpack this. 🟣 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐂𝐄: 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐒 Unlike typical companies, most OSS #startups go through two stages of company-building. First, they build a product that users can download and use for free. Then, they build paid features on top or find other ways to monetize them. There are three primary ways of monetizing OSS: 1. 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: Companies offer support, services, and training to help customers implement OSS. i.e. RedHat 2. 𝐒𝐚𝐚𝐒: Vendors host and manage the software, charging users for access via subscription. i.e. Databricks 3. 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞: Companies offer OS products and profit from proprietary additions like add-ons, apps, vertical products and services. The idea sounds simple. Execution, not so much. Open-core businesses are sometimes referred to as "dual-licensing" or hybrid models. There are nuances. 𝐃𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 involves releasing source code under both OS and commercial licenses. i.e. MySQL. This model has led to a distrust of copyleft licenses: commercial vendors don't always contribute code back. 𝐈𝐧 𝐡𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 vendors build applications, services, or management on top of an OS platform. These applications can be proprietary, OS or even open-core, but the platform they use is fully OS and open to all collaborators. i.e. Cloud. 4.𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 The models above follow a simple assumption: Create a successful OS platform, build applications or services on top, and customers will come. That does not always happen. How about the #platform? Will customers pay for programming interfaces? Business models are shifting from applications to supply chains. There is money to make/save with OSS platforms (over time the cost of software acquisition is far less than the TCO). 🟣 𝐁𝐎𝐓𝐓𝐎𝐌 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄: 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞? The picture is fluid. ✺The most profitable FOSS company is Red Hat, yet the largest global OSS contributor is Microsoft. ✺OSS can give a competitive advantage (i.e. Elastic and Gitlab), yet the most successful business models are "#opensource compatible" rather than FOSS. While hybrid strategies are frowned upon by purists, building a FOSS business doesn't pay off often. 🟣 𝐒𝐎𝐒 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐒𝐒 Thus, your OS commercial strategy will make or break your #business. ✺How 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 is your business❓ ✺What is your licensing strategy❓ On a bigger picture: ✺Will #bigtech undercut your offerings❓ ✺ Will #GenAI become a threat❓ Let's open it to the floor! 🟣 i-Expand#commercialization #healthcare #digitalhealth #entrepreneurship #uae
